'The Artist' Wins Five Oscars Including Best Picture and Best Actor [Full List of Winners Included] Academy%20Awards%2084th%20Banner%285%29

As Gold Derby predicted, "The Artist" won Best Picture, Director (Michel Hazanavicius), Actor (Jean Dujardin), Score (Ludovic Bource) and Costume Design (Mark Bridges) (See full list of winners here.)

Meryl Streep finally got her third Oscar as she won Best Actress for "The Iron Lady" having lost 12 times since winning this award in 1983 for "Sophie's Choice." She edged out frontrunner Viola Davis ("The Help").

"Hugo" also pulled off a couple of big surprises as Robert Richardson won Cinematography over Emmanuel Lubezki ("The Tree of Life") and its Visual Effects prevailed over those of "Rise of the Planet of the Apes." "Hugo" also claimed Art Direction and both sound awards -- Editing and Mixing.

As predicted, Christopher Plummer ("Beginners") and Octavia Spencer ("The Help") won the supporting acting prizes.

Woody Allen won his third Original Screenplay award for "Midnight in Paris." This marked his record 15th bid in this category.

Alexander Payne picked up his second Adapted Screenplay Oscar for "The Descendants" sharing the award with his collaborators Nat Faxon and Jim Rash.

As expected, "Rango" was named Best Animated Feature. Frontrunner "A Separation" became the first film in Farsi to win the Foreign Language Feature race.

Grammy and Emmy nominee Bret McKenzie won an Oscar when he claimed Best Song for "Man or Muppet" from "The Muppets."

The Documentary Oscars went to two heartfelt films -- "Undefeated" won the Feature award while "Saving Face" won the Short prize.

The frontrunners claimed the other two Oscars for shorts as "The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Bellmore" won the Animated race and "The Shore" claimed the Live Action category.

No surprise with The Artist winning Best Picture and some of the other awards.

The Lead Actor and Lead Actress going to Jean Dujardin and Meryl Streep were sorta surprises to me because I thought it could have also easily gone to George Clooney and Viola Davis.

Congrats to Meryl for finally winning her 3rd Oscar! She's still 3/17 but at least she got her 3rd win after so many years of being so close [imo and many experts].

No surprises with the supporting winners or director.

I was a little surprised Hugo won 5/11 of its awards because most experts were saying it would only win 3 of 11 it was up for.

I still have to see it and the movie that won Best Foreign Language Film - A Separation.

I'm hopefully going to see that next Monday at my local Tower Theater because they have free popcorn for students on Mondays! yay

Instead of making some more threads I will post the ratings for the Oscars in here:

http://insidetv.ew.com/2012/02/27/oscars-ratings/

Did Billy Crystal rescue the Oscars?

Even with few box-office heavyweights in contention for top categories, early ratings for Sunday night’s 84th Annual Academy Awards telecast show a slight rise from last year.

ABC’s preliminary household ratings suggest a 4 percent gain in Oscars viewership from 2011.

That could easily shift, however, when the national ratings come in. We’ll update this post with firm viewership numbers in the next couple hours… refresh for the latest info.

In the meantime, here’s how the Oscars have fared in recent years:

– 2011: 37.9 million viewers / 11.8 adult demo rating (King’s Speech)
– 2010: 41.7 million viewers / 13.3 adult demo rating (Hurt Locker)
– 2009: 36.3 million viewers / 12.1 adult demo rating (Slumdog Millionaire)
– 2008: 32 million viewers / 10.7 adult demo rating (No Country for Old Men) — LOWEST
– 2007: 40.2 million viewers / 14.1 adult demo rating (The Departed)

– 1998: 55.2 million viewers (Titanic) — HIGHEST

Also Sunday night: CBS’ Amazing Race (7.6 million, 2.1) was down 25 percent this week (understandably). NBC’s Celebrity Apprentice (5 million, 1.8) was hammered down 31 percent (also understandably — if you like celebrities, are you going to watch Donald Trump’s Island of Broken Toys or the Oscars?).
