'The Artist' Wins 7 BAFTAs Including Best Picture! Complete List of Winners Included. 1329084928-baftas-the-artist-news

http://www.goldderby.com/films/news/2540/bafta-awards-winners-news-135790864.html

"The Artist" won seven of its leading 12 BAFTA bids -- Best Picture, Director & Original Screenplay (Michel Hazanavicius), Actor (Jean Dujardin), Cinematography, Costume Design and Score.

"Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy," which was second with 11 nominations, had to settle for Adapted Screenplay and Best British Film.

Two of the other five films up for Best Picture -- "The Descendants" (3 noms), and "Drive" (4) -- were shut out while "The Help" won just one of its five races -- Supporting Actress (Octavia Spencer).

"The Iron Lady" won two of its three bids: Best Actress (Meryl Streep) and Makeup. As with the Oscars, Streep holds the BAFTA record for most nominations -- now 14 -- although she had but one win ("The French Lieutenant's Woman," 1981) before this year.

"Hugo," which reaped nine nods but was snubbed in the top race, won two as well -- Production Design and Sound. "Hugo" helmer Martin Scorsese was feted with the BAFTA fellowship.

Christopher Plummer ("Beginners") became the oldest BAFTA acting champ with his Supporting Actor win for "Beginnners."

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" won one of its four tech nods -- Visual Effects.

"My Week with Marilyn" lost all six of its races, including a Supporting Actress bid by Judi Dench who has won six times; she also has four TV BAFTAS to show for her record dozen nods on that side. "War Horse" was defeated in five technical categories.

BAFTA has a two-part nominating process, with these nominees culled from longlists determined by votes from the respective chapters, which are akin to the academy's branches, and the membership as a whole. On the longlists, "My Week with Marilyn" and "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" merited a leading 16 mentions, including five for performances, while "The Iron Lady" earned 14, including four for the cast. "The Artist," "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," "Midnight in Paris" and "War Horse" all reaped 13 listings. Scoring an even dozen were "Hugo" and "The Help" while "Drive," "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" and "The Ides of March" netted 11 apiece. "We Need to Talk About Kevin" earned 10, "Moneyball" scored 8 and "The Descendants" managed 7.

BAFTA indicates on the longlists the top five from the respective chapters so all voters can see what the experts prefer. These proved to be a good barometer of the eventual nominees as "The Artist" led with 10 of its 12 chapter mentions making the top five while "Hugo" had nine and "Tinker Tailor" eight in this top tier. While support for "My Week with Marilyn" was relatively weak as it only had six of its 16 bids make this top tier, it translated five of these into nominations plus a bid for Best British Film.

The Directors slate and all but one of the 20 acting nominees (Carey Mulligan, "Drive") were in the top five on the longlists. So were all the screenplay nominees but for "The Iron Lady." "War Horse" picked up two of its five technical bids despite not being among the top tier for Cinematography and Visual Effects. The only other outliers were in Costumes ("Tinker Tailor Solider Spy"), Score ("The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo") and Sound ("The Artist").

The winners -- except for the two picture prizes, performance and foreign language film -- were chosen by the chapters.

The 65th annual BAFTA awards were handed out in London Sunday evening at the Royal Opera House. Below, the list the winners. Read our full news report.

Unlike the Oscars, where the nominations in each category are determined by the members of that particular branch while the winners are voted on by the entire membership, the BAFTA nominations come from the membership at large while the winners are chosen by chapters (akin to the academy's branches) except for picture, performance, documentary and foreign language film which are decided by everyone.

I tried to look this up on youtube but had no luck. 'The Artist' Wins 7 BAFTAs Including Best Picture! Complete List of Winners Included. 478927

Congrats to the winners.

I think this officially makes Jean Dujardin the front runner!

I mean he won the Globe for Comedy Actor, SAG, and now Bafta.

Sure Clooney also got the Globe for Drama Actor and the Critic's Choice Award but it is not as many big wins as Dujardin now.

I could still see Clooney winning however now I think he is not the front runner.
