Report: Edge's WWE Contract Expiring Soon

PWInsider.com is reporting that several WWE sources have informed them Edge's contract with WWE will expire on May 1, 2012.

This
would allow for the Hall of Famer to appear for any professional
wrestling organization in any capacity. Edge's in-ring career is over
due to injury but the contract news is surprising because of his recent
induction to WWE's Hall of Fame and the company typically keeps major
retires stars under some contract such as Stone Cold Steve Austin and
Shawn Michaels.

Its not a secret that Edge's contract was expiring. He said himself when he retired that his contract would be up in just over a year. That was just over a year ago. I think he had been planning to let it expire also. So if he hasn't re-signed yet, something tells me he won't.

He has spent his entire life with the WWE, so he has no reason to appear at another company. If he did re-sign, it would be on a Legend's Contract (rather than a performers contract, like he was on before) which I think would mean he would have the option to appear elsewhere. Some Legend Contracts allow the person to appear elsewhere anyways, cos some guys (Sgt Slaughter springs to mind) have appeared at some indy shows and signings unrelated to WWE. I think he needs permission, but its a luxury not offered to those on performer contracts (with the exception of Jerry Lawler, but he's the only one I can tihnk of).

Its nto that he signed a performers contract when he retired, he was already on one. I may be mistaken, but I do believe his initial plan was to wrestle for the past year until his contract expired and then retire. Being forced to retire a year early mean he was still under a performers contract at that point.

It's just basically a pay per appearance contract with WWE as an priority. So basically whenever WWE comes a callin you got to drop whatever prior engagement you had with other indy promotions and Do the appearance for WWE.
