Instead of pumping hands and backslapping Emmy voters, producers of "Family Guy" are back to their usual treatment -- whacking them with insults. Or, rather, the program's famously offensive characters are doing it for them. In the FYC DVD mailing just shipped to TV academy members, crude dimwit dad Peter Griffin snarls, "Come on, you bloated, overprivileged Brentwood Jews. Let us into your little club." His bizarrely sophisticated infant son Stewie nudges voters a bit more slyly, "It's a secret ballot. You can still tell people you voted for 'Modern Family.'" (A nice inside joke, since Twentieth Century Fox Television produces both programs.)
Such outrageous wooing worked in the past. In 2009, "Family Guy" became the second animated show in Emmy history to be nominated for Best Comedy Series (following "The Flintstones" in 1961) after sending a FYC mailer that plopped Stewie face in Barack Obama's "Vote for Change" poster. Inside pages said, "You have to vote for us. We did a Holocaust episode" and "We peaked three years ago so by your logic we should get an Emmy now."
"Family Guy" failed to be nominated over the past two years, but it continued its cheeky attack. In 2010, Peter was depicted on the cover of its FYC mailing looking like "Precious" star Gabourey Sidibe. Headline text read: "'Family Guy' based on the novel 'Push' by Sapphire." Inside text: "Vote for us or you're a racist" and "Celebrating diversity – written by 8 Wasps, 6 Jews, 2 Asians and 1 Gay."
Last year's mailer showed Stewie looking up at an empty trophy case, saying, "It's been this way for 8 years and it's starting to hurt morale." Inside: "We paid for a Golden Globe and we didn't get it so we're owed an award" and "This DVD has 1 frame of porn – find the porn."
-------------------------- What do you think of this campaign?
If you were an Emmy voter would you appreciate this sort of move?
And do you think Family Guy deserves an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series? Will it get the nomination again?
