WWE Smackdown house show results July 7, 2012 El Paso, Texas Report by Jacob Randolph, PWTorch reader
*** = alternate reporter's thoughts on matches. From http://pwtorch.com/artman2/publish/Arena_Reports_10/article_63115.shtml
The venue was actually quite small with a few thousand attending. The fans were pretty active the entire night, which made for a fun show.
(1) Sin Cara beat Hunico (w/Camacho). Sin Cara actually had a pretty solid match with a lot of classic lucha libre style moves and some chain wrestling with very few foul-ups. Sin Cara received a very decent pop from the local crowd, being that El Paso is a border city very close to his home fanbase in Mexico.
***(1) Sin Cara beat Hunico (w/Camacho). This match was actually pretty good with both men getting in their offense. Sin Cara won with a nice flip powerbomb after a solid ten minutes.***
(2) Vickie Guerrero beat Kaitlyn with A.J. as the special guest referee. Typical Divas match. A.J. stole the show once again with her amazing showmanship. Vickie picked up the victory after receiving the loudest boos of the night. Post-match, A.J. hit Vickie with a Lou Thesz press after Vickie attacked her from behind.
***(2) Vickie Guerrero beat Kaitlyn with A.J. as the special guest referee. Comedy from Vickie to start the match – she is from El Paso! – but after they locked up, Vickie surprisingly took a couple of bumps (powerslam) before using dastardly tactics to pull out the win in about six minutes.***
(3) Ryback beat Drew McIntyre. Ryback received a decent pop while McIntyre came out to crickets. A small "Goldberg" chant was heard. McIntyre actually got in a surprising amount of offense, although the match ended in squash fashion.
***(3) Ryback beat Drew McIntyre. A back and forth slugfest that Ryback won with a spinning Samoa Drop after about ten minutes.***
(4) IC champion Christian beat Cody Rhodes to retain the Intercontinental Title. Christian and Cody both received equally good pops and the fans were very back and forth the entire match. Cody actually picked up the dirty win at one point to tease a title change, only to have Teddy Long interrupt his celebration and re-start the match. Christian then hit the spear for the clean victory.
***(4) IC champion Christian beat Cody Rhodes to retain the Intercontinental Title. A lot of comedy to start the match from Christian (hamming to the pro-Peeps crowd), but after they locked up, a very good back and forth match. Rhodes won with his feet on the ropes, but Teddy Long came out and re-started the match. A few minutes and a Spear later, Christian retained in about 15 minutes.***
(5) Kane beat Chris Jericho. Y2J wasn't advertised and when the lights went out everyone assumed that it was Kane, so Jericho's light-up jacket was a complete surprise. Kane received a huge pop, while only the die-hard fans popped for Jericho. Pretty good back and forth match and clean for the most part, but Jericho attempted to get a chair at one point. Jericho ended up getting a close two count after a codebreaker, but Kane landed a chokeslam for the win.
***(7) Kane beat Chris Jericho. Surprise of the night was Jericho on the show. This was a basic match with Jericho egging on the crowd at the start. No real high-flying moves until Jericho came off the top rope into a Kane chokeslam for the win in about 12 minutes.***
(6) World Hvt. champion Sheamus beat Alberto Del Rio to retain the World Hvt. Title. The mostly Hispanic crowd showed no love for Alberto, while Sheamus received one of the biggest pops of the night. A good back and forth match with Sheamus using his typical power moveset and playing to the crowd a lot. Ricardo was involved a lot, but Sheamus hit the Brogue kick for the win. Afterward, he took the time to sign a lot of autographs after the match; it was very classy.
***(5) World Hvt. champion Sheamus beat Alberto Del Rio to retain the World Hvt. Title. I digress to say that Alberto got one of the biggest pops of the night (rightly so), but Sheamus, for whom my 5-year-old made a sign for, got a massive pop! Del Rio started by calling the crowd a bunch of commoners since he is the only true “Mexican” here. This was a back and forth match the Ricardo got involved in, but Sheamus ended it with a massive Brogue Kick to retain in about 15 minutes.***
[Intermission]
(7) Great Khali beat Jinder Mahal. Khali received a small pop. This was a time-filler match to make the main event look amazing. Khali hit the Punjabi Slam for the victory.
***(6) Great Khali beat Jinder Mahal. What can I say? Typical Khali match that he ended with a chokeslam after about eight minutes.***
(8) WWE champion C.M. Punk beat Daniel Bryan in a Street Fight to retain the WWE Title. Surprisingly, I was one of maybe 20 D-Bryan fans in the crowd, so he didnt get a very warm welcome. The roof blew off the place when Punk's music hit, though. They put on a clinic, as usual, and there were a number of weapons used including kendo sticks and chairs. Bryan played to his few fans in the crowd a lot by actually going around the ring and high-fiving and hugging anyone with a "Yes!" shirt on. The Punk fans were very loud the entire time, and the crowd made the whole night very entertaining. Bryan got a number of close two counts and dominated 80 percent of the match. Bryan was about to go for another pin when A.J.'s music hit and she did the typical prance-around-the-ring bit to a huge pop. Punk recovered while A.J. skipped, Bryan was distracted, and then Punk hit the GTS for the win. Punk payed homage to Eddie Guerrero after the match, being that Eddie was from El Paso.
***(8) WWE champion C.M. Punk beat Daniel Bryan in a Street Fight to retain the WWE Title. One word – awesome. Punk came out the biggest pop of the evening. Needless to say there was nothing wrong with this match. It mainly stayed in the ring and the only weapons used were a kendo stick and a chair. I’ve seen both these guys wrestle in ROH, so, to watch them live in the main event of a WWE event was awesome. Punk hit the GTS after A.J. came out and skipped around the ring.***
Overall, it was a surprisingly good night. A lot of good matches and a great crowd that was very involved the whole time.
