WWE Smackdown house show results July 28, 2012 Johnson City, Tenn. at Freedom Hall Civic Center Report by Scotty Wampler, PWTorch correspondent
Detailed article below:
C.M. Punk retained the WWE Championship Saturday night in Johnson City, Tenn., defeating both Daniel Bryan and Kane in the card's triple threat main event. Punk received by far the largest ovation from the audience of approximately 5,000 (eyeballed) at the Freedom Hall Civic Center. The crowd seemed content ignoring the champ's apparent heel turn last Monday on Raw, cheering him loudly throughout the contest.
The first man introduced, Kane was mostly an afterthought in the match, spending much of his time outside the ring recovering from injuries sustained by back-and-forth kicks to the head and torso by both Punk and Bryan, whose dueling "Yes!" and "No!" chants with each exchanged kick to the Big Red Monster elicited a corresponding chant from those in attendance.
Bryan's "Yes" schtick was super-over with the crowd, as I suspect is the case in most cities right now. Bryan's eyes also seemed to burn holes into a ringside group that chanted "oompa loompa" throughout the match.
Fun stuff.
Both Punk and Bryan took turns giving the crowd their best Hulk Hogan impressions during and after the match. Punk was the first, initiating the Hulkster's "comeback" routine that resulted in a finger point and, ultimately, a big leg drop on Bryan. A.J.'s jilted ex-fiance would later return the favor by riling up the crowd with his hand to his ear on all four sides of the ring.
After a double chokeslam attempt by Kane was countered into a double suplex delivered by Punk and Bryan, Bryan maintained control of the match until A.J.'s music hit and the Diva graced us with her presence for the entire 24 seconds it took her to skip down the aisle, circle the ring, and head backstage again. The appearance was enough to send Bryan into fits of rage, though, providing enough of a distraction to give Punk the chance to hit the GTS at 12:37 for the pinfall win. The crowd went nuts, and Punk celebrated and kissed babies.
In a noteworthy roster development in the night's opening match, Ted DiBiase, Jr. continued his return to action following shoulder surgery after returning to the house show circuit last weekend. DiBiase, who was introduced to the crowd with a "Please welcome back" message from the ring announcer, looked in good ring shape and showed little to no signs of rust against his opponent, Hunico.
---------------
Full card break down here:
(1) Ted DiBiase beat Hunico (w/Camacho) via DQ. Camacho interfered at 3:35 to end the match in a DQ victory for DiBiase after he applied the sleeper to Hunico. Have no fear, Drew McIntyre was there, and rushed to the ring to break up the beat down on DiBiase at the hands of Hunico and Camacho. But, wait! DiBiase had a great idea and asked for a microphone to share it with us. Since they're all four there, why not have a tag team match?
(2) Ted DiBiase & Drew McIntyre beat Hunico & Camacho. After strings of rowdy "U-S-A" chants by the crowd, DiBiase turned a sleeper attempt on Hunico into a Rock Bottom, ending the contest at 6:21 in a pinfall victory for the faces. Standard opening fare.
(3) Jinder Mahal beat "Showtime" Percy Watson via submission. The "U-S-A" chants bled over into Mahal's entrance, and throughout the entire match. But, he showed us, scoring the submission victory at 9:21 via the Camel Clutch. Most of the crowd had no idea who Watson was.
(3) Kaitlyn beat Natalya. In the night's lone Divas match, Kaitlyn defeated Natalya at the 5:41 mark after countering a Sharpshooter attempt and scoring a roll-up cradle pinfall. Nothing too exciting here, but Natayla's heelish behavior resulted in impressive heat. The crowd really loved to hate her. She ripped at least two ringside signs in protest following the loss.
(4) World Hvt. champion Sheamus beat Alberto Del Rio in a Last Man Standing match to retain the World Heavyweight Title. Both of these guys were so over, entrances alone seemed to take forever. The audience ate up everything they gave them. Sheamus, especially, garnered a MEGA pop, second only to Punk all night, and a very close second at that. The pair spent no time inside the ring before the action spilled first onto the floor, and then over into the ringside crowd. Sheamus tossed Del Rio over the ringside rail into the audience and dragged him to the arena floor wall, slamming his head into a door. The two made frequent use of trash cans and a kendo stick throughout the match, as well. The crowd was ON FIRE for this match. After a couple botched Brogue Kicks by Sheamus, Del Rio was handed a chair by Rodriguez, who stood on the ring apron. Del Rio took a running swing a Sheamus, hit Rodriguez instead (huge crowd pop), setting up a Brogue Kick by Sheamus that finally connected for the pinfall win at 18:33. Longest match of the night, and probably the best.
[ 15-minute Intermission ]
(5) Justin Gabriel beat Leo Kruger. Borefest. Gabriel won with reverse DDT at 7:28.
(6) Chris Jericho & Christian beat Cody Rhodes & Dolph Ziggler in the semi-main event. This was the obligatory "get all the stars we can into one match" match. Ziggler wore to the ring a Jericho "wanna-bee" t-shirt, setting up Y2J ripping it off with authority after getting the hot tag a few minutes into the contest. Lots of mic interaction in the match, with Cody telling the crowd to "shut up" and Jericho urging the audience to chant "Greaseball" in Ziggler's direction. Obviously, it worked. More "U-S-A" chants followed, drawing looks of confusion from just about everyone in the ring (one can only assume Johnson City is anti-Canadian and pro-heel). To end the match, Christian hit Ziggler with a spear to a big crowd pop, followed by a Cross Rhodes by Cody delivered to Christian, a broken up Walls of Jericho attempt on Cody by Jericho and, finally, a semi-botched Codebreaker delivered to Cody, with Jericho scoring the pinfall win at 17:53. Good match.
Jericho took to the mic again following the win to remind the crowd he used to live in nearby Morristown, Tenn., presumably during his Smoky Mountain Wrestling stint.
(7) WWE champion C.M. Punk beat Daniel Bryan and Kane in a three-way match to retain the WWE Title. The show concluded with the title match detailed above.
