In addition to hosting the upcoming 85th Academy Awards, Seth MacFarlane could be in the running for an Oscar.
echnically, he's eligible for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for his comedic blockbuster, "Ted," but his best shot is really in the race for Best Original Song.
MacFarlane wrote the lyrics to "Everybody Needs a Best Friend," which plays during the movie's opening credits. The melody was written by Walter Murphy, who composes much of the music on "Family Guy," and it's done in the big band style that is usually done on that show. The tune is performed by multiple Grammy winner Norah Jones, who makes a small appearance in the movie as herself being one of the many women the titular character has hooked up with. (Watch below.)
MacFarlane has actually been rewarded for his songwriting in the past. In 2002, he and Murphy both won the Emmy for Outstanding Music and Lyrics for "You've Got a Lot to See," from the episode "Brian Wallows and Peter Swallows". (See YouTube clip.)
MacFarlane was also nominated for Emmys for writing "Down's Syndrome Girl" (2010) and "Christmastime Is Killing Us" (2011). The latter also earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture or for Television. He lost to "I See the Light" from the movie "Tangled." | |
