1-3-13 Impact Ratings See Good Increase Impact_Wide_29

TNA Impact on Thursday, January 3, 2013 scored a 1.14 rating, up significantly from the year-end average of a 1.00 rating.

It was the highest rating since August 23, 2012 and the second-highest rating in the new timeslot an hour earlier.

Impact averaged 1.62 million viewers, which was the most viewers since 1.72 million on Aug. 23 and also the second-most viewers in the new timeslot.

- Despite the strong increases in overall rating and viewership, Impact barely moved in the key male demographics. In both males 18-49 & 18-34, Impact increased 0.03 compared to last week's show.

Week-to-week growth was seen among younger viewers, interestingly. Impact doubled its m12-17 rating from last week and m12-34 was up more than one-tenth of a rating.

- On cable TV Thursday night, Impact was a distant #35 in overall viewers, and ranked poorly in the key male demos (#28 in m18-34 and #25 in m18-49). ESPN's Fiesta Bowl game certainly contributed to that. Impact was also topped by South Park, Family Guy, Pawn Stars, and NCIS repeats in m18-49.

The Impact episode one year-ago this week scored one-tenth of a ratings point higher in key adult males and the show two years-ago scored two-tenths higher.

- Also of note, Impact did not provide a strong lead-in to Spike TV's new Bellator 360 program. The Bellator show did not register on cable TV Thursday night in either viewers or male demos. It remains to be seen if the first fight Bellator card on January 17 fares better.

Caldwell's Analysis: Excitement and Hope for the first show of the year, plus a push for Sting returning appeared to contribute to the improved performance. Whether they can maintain this level or if they slip back to a 1.0 rating and 1.3 million viewers remains to be seen. Within this week's show, it will be interesting to see if a full quarter devoted to the Knockouts also contributed to the performance. We should have quarter-hour ratings early next week to see if that's the case.

TNA Impact on Thursday, January 3, 2013 officially scored a 1.14 rating off a first hour 1.06 rating and second hour 1.23 rating. It was the highest second hour rating since August 23, 2012, which was also the highest-rated show in Impact's new timeslot.

First Hour Break Down

Q1: Impact opened with a 1.11 rating, which was the highest Q1 rating of the two-hour era. The start of a new year and the possibility of a quick 1.3.13 reveal seemed to get people to their TVs on-time, which was not the case with the earlier timeslot in 2012.

The segment itself featured the Wrestler of the Year announcement and a follow-up segment involving Jeff Hardy, Austin Aries, and Bobby Roode. Also, there was only half of a commercial, which helped the Q1 rating.

Q2: Impact dipped to a 1.05 rating for James Storm vs. Kazarian in the opening match, an Aces & Eights video, and one-and-a-half commercials, which affected the Q2 rating.

Q3: Impact increased slightly to a 1.08 rating for D.O.C. screaming about Sting, a quick cut-away to a commercial, no follow-up on D.O.C. calling out Sting, and Kid Kash vs. Christian York in an X Division match.

Q4: Impact dipped to a show-low 0.99 rating for an abrupt singles match of Joey Ryan vs. Hernandez, Garett Bischoff and Wes Brisco backstage with Kurt Angle, and two full commercial breaks, which affected the Q4 rating.

Second Hour Break Down

Q5: Impact jumped to a show-high 1.31 rating. Applying the Q1 analysis, the hope of a new year and potential reveal of 1.3.13 at the top of the second hour seemed to attract TNA's late-comers who tune in at 9:00 EST for the former first hour/new second hour.

The segment featured Hulk Hogan calling out Bully Ray and Brooke Hogan, then Hogan slapping Ray with an "indefinite suspension." There was a commercial break followed by a Joseph Park training video leading into the Knockouts Segment.

Q6: Impact scored a 1.23 rating for a segment completely devoted to the Knockouts via a long-form tag match of Tara & Gail Kim vs. Mickie James & Miss Tessmacher. Plus, one mid-match commercial break.

The math is... big audience at the top of the hour - audience turned away by the Hogan skit - audience that had their Impact curiosity tickled and will tune in again later or next week Knockouts being a TV draw = slight decrease of 6.1 percent from Q5.

Q7: Impact declined to a 1.16 rating for a "bridge" segment that carried the show to the main event. The segment featured a steel cage being set up, Hogan arguing with Aries and Roode in his office, main event ring introductions, and the first minute of the main event. Plus, one commercial break.

Q8: Impact increased to a 1.21 rating for the TV main event of Samoa Joe & Kurt Angle vs. Aces & Eights in a steel cage, plus one commercial. The segment also featured Sting casually returning to TV as the payoff to the 1.3.13 item hyped throughout the show. This was the highest-rated Q8 segment since Aug. 23.

Caldwell's Analysis: Now we find out how much of this big audience comes back next week for the latest chapters of TNA's stories or if Impact eventually returns to the 1.0 rating / 1.3 million viewers level. It will be interesting to see where Impact is in a few weeks.
