Exciting news for those frightened by Christmas and hoity Judge Reinhold bankteller-types, those Frank Sinatra-singing creatures of the night, the Gremlins, may be making a belated cinematic comeback!
The “Man of Steel” studio are considering rebooting (now don’t get your knickers in a twist, that doesn’t necessarily mean the film will be a complete shot-for-shot remake of the 1984 film) the classic Steven Spielberg produced hit, according to Vulture.
There have been numerous talks held over the years about relaunching the “Gremlins” brand back into the cinematic marketplace, but those talks have all stalled – and mostly at the ‘shit, this thing is going to cost a packet to make’ point of the conversation. Vulture states though that things are looking good for 2013/WB/Gizmo union though.
Though he returned for 1990′s “Gremlins 2 : The New Batch”, “rebel “Gremlins” director Joe Dante told Moviehole he didn’t expect to get the call to do another sequel and, in fact, assumed the studio would just make the first film again.
“I’m constantly asked ‘why the hold up on Gremlins 3?’”, Dante said an interview with Moviehole in 2010, “And that’s because those films were such products of the technology at the time. The movie was more limited and created by technology. They were puppets. The storylines, then, were based around what we could do with the Gremlins. Now, of course, anything is possible but it becomes a little more difficult to hone it on what your storyline would be.”
“First of all, I won’t be asked. Second of all, I wouldn’t bring back the original cast because it’s been too long – the kids now would be familiar with the title, and familiar with Gizmo and Stripe, but as far as the actual [live-action] characters and story, they don’t know them.. it.”
I hope Dante’s wrong about one thing, and that Warners does decide to include Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates in the new film (if even in small parts).
