As Gold Derby predicted, "The Avengers" won Best Movie at the MTV Movie Awards. In addition, the Joss Whedon-directed superhero film won Best Fight for an epic battle between the title heroes and their nemesis, Loki (Tom Hiddleston). Hiddleston also won Best Villain for the role, beating frontrunner Leonardo DiCaprio ("Django Unchained").
"Django Unchained" pulled off an upset of its own in a night full of surprises, winning Best WTF Moment for the destruction of Candieland despite distant 33/1 odds. That beat Seth MacFarlane's raunchy scene from "Ted," which was favored to win by most editors and users. However, MacFarlane did win Best Duo for the film with co-star Mark Wahlberg.
Bradley Cooper won Best Male Performance for "Silver Linings Playbook" in an upset against Channing Tatum, who was favored by Gold Derby predictors to win for his role as a stripper in "Magic Mike." The film also won Best Female Performance for Jennifer Lawrence, who won the category last year for "The Hunger Games." Cooper and Lawrence took Best Kiss.
Lawrence was also expected to win Best Scared-as-Sh*t Performance for "House at the End of the Street" but lost in an upset to Suraj Sharma ("Life of Pi").
Channing Tatum was the frontrunner to win Best Shirtless Performance, but lost that prize to Taylor Lautner for "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 2." The "Twilight" series had previously swept the MTV Movie Awards, winning Best Movie four times in a row, but the final installment was snubbed in the top race this year; Lautner was the film's only nomination.
The awards were hosted by comedian Rebel Wilson, who didn't go away empty handed. She was awarded Best Breakthrough Performance for her role in the musical comedy "Pitch Perfect." She also won Best Musical Moment as part of the film's a cappella ensemble. | |
