"The Americans" reaped a leading four bids for the Television Critics Assn. Awards. It contends for the top prize of Program of the Year as well as Best Drama, Drama Performance (Matthew Rhys) and Best New Series.
The TCA, which is comprised primarily of print and web writers, announced its nominees for the 28th annual edition of their kudos just hours before the rival Broadcast Television Journalists Assn. bestows their awards. The TCA champs will be crowned on Aug. 3 during the summer press tour.
"Game of Thrones" won Program from the TCA last year and is back in that race this year as well as the one for drama series.
Reigning Drama Series champ "Breaking Bad" defends its title and also contends for Program and Drama Performance (Bryan Cranston).
On the comedy front, "Louie" and its star Louis C.K. are looking for bookend awards.
For the first time in the history of these kudos, women outnumber men in contention for the performance prizes by six to four. Last year was the first time that they had achieved parity in these categories.
