'Under The Dome' Gets Big Ratings [13.1 Million Viewers]

A welcome surprise during broadcast’s usually dry summer months: CBS’ Under the Dome just debuted to a whopping 13.1 million viewers and 3.2 rating among adults 18-49 last night.

That’s the most-watched summer debut on any network since NBC’s The Singing Bee in 2007. It’s also very competitive with last season’s crop of dramas, matching Fox’s The Following as the second-highest new drama debut (NBC’s Revolution was #1).

Under the Dome is based on the Stephen King novel and was originally developed for CBS’ corporate cousin Showtime. The ratings make you wonder: Should CBS have aired Dome during the regular season? After all, it just pulled a bigger number than Vegas or Golden Boy. Maybe. But I like that CBS went big with a heavily promoted major scripted show during the so-called off-season. When broadcasters air scripted shows in the summer, it’s often weak filler (like NBC’s recent Crossing Lines debut). Shows that are inexpensively acquired, softly promoted. Low expectations theater. It’s an echo of when broadcast networks used to largely disregard summer all together, filling it with repeats, until cable networks came along and started mining the sunny months with original programming. Nowadays, you have to put on your best content all the time, there’s simply too many other decent distraction choices out there to get away with something that isn’t demanding the viewer’s attention.

Under the Dome also continued the apocalyptic-TV winning streak: AMC’s The Walking Dead, Revolution and now Dome – which isn’t about the end of the whole world, obviously, but tells an apocalypse story on a small-town scale.

I recorded it but I haven't watched it yet.

I wanna see this show If it got this big rating.I thought the show looked kinda silly since there stuck in a dome it reminds me of the Simpsons movie.Why can't they just DIG UNDERGROUND????? I'm pretty sure its not that deep down there.

Watched it but so far don't care for it/

none of the characters interest me...none of their storyline really grabbed me. they better pick it up in the next few episodes or i'm just gonna stick to watching Mistresses...love that show!

On the fence with this one, I prefered Devious Maids, not sure why ABC passed on that one for Mistresses, the pilot was horrible but the episode after was better, but with Devious Maids, loved the Pilot more.

Devious Maids looks stupid to me. Didn't like the Pilot. I'm loving Mistresses.

Lol I wanted to look up Mistresses, so I google'd it and one of the top results was to "meet a mistress in my city!"

Anyways, I never thought I'd see the day where one of the main characters on an ABC show was last seen on a television screen doing softcore. (Her wiki says she was on a Skinamax show called Femme Fatales.)

I dunno, Desperate Housewives was witty and funny, I didn't laugh once in Mistresses.

But Mistresses is good, saw episode 4 yesterday getting better, but still by no means any comparison to Desperate Housewives.

Devious Maids on the other hand, Marc Cherry brought the same wit and over the top anymated Characters Desperate Housewives had, that had a serious story but through the process filled with laughs. There were no laughing Moments in Mistresses

Oh and finally saw Under the Dome, it's actually really good, they set up some great plots, (guy killed Journalist husband, now staying with her, Crazy Boyfriend guy. Cop secrets, Girl her fiance stuck outside of dome, the things being dumped and seeminlgy being to close to side of the dome gives young people seazures. To me, best show on Broadcast television for the summer. I'm excited to see it next week. IMO 8/10 stars for sure, worth the watch.

How many million viewers doesn't matter when it comes to shows.

Example: Harry's Law had 8 million viewers but had a 0.7 Adults 18-49 Rating (got canceled)
The office had 3.5 Million viewers but had a 2.2 Adults 18-49 Rating (Got Renewed)

How many million viewers has very little effect on the show.

Also Nikita/Secret Circle could barely scrape up a million viewers.

Also Secret Circle lost 75% of the Audience The Vampire Diaries had, so no wonder it was canceled. It had the best timeslot on the whole network and couldn't draw.

Well then stop bitching about Nikita's cancelation. It's ratings, after 4 years what Shit, it got a chance and failed immensly. Move on.
