Claire Danes (“Homeland”) is the defending Best Drama Actress champ and is the only one of this year’s nominees to already have an Emmy.
This category has three first-time Emmy contenders: Vera Farmiga (“Bates Motel”), Kerry Washington (“Scandal”), and Robin Wright (“House of Cards”).
This is the fourth consecutive Emmy nomination for Connie Britton (“Nashville”) but for three different roles. She was nominated in this category in 2010 and 2011 for “Friday Night Lights” and reaped a movie/miniseries bid in 2012 for “American Horror Story.”
If Washington wins, she would be the first African-American woman to ever win this category.
Farmiga is the only past Oscar nominee nominated in this category. Other past Oscar nominees who have contended in this race include: Glenn Close (“Damages”), Geena Davis (“Commander-in-Chief”), Minnie Driver (“The Riches”), Sally Field (“Brothers and Sisters”), Holly Hunter (“Saving Grace”), and Angela Lansbury (“Murder, She Wrote”).
Elisabeth Moss is a double nominee this year. She contends in this category for “Mad Men” and as TV Movie/Miniseries Actress for “Top of the Lake.” The last woman to win two acting Emmys in one night was Stockard Channing in 2002 for her supporting roles in the drama series “The West Wing” and telefilm “The Matthew Shepard Story.”
Most Drama Actress wins (4): Tyne Daly (“Cagney and Lacey”) and Michael Learned (“The Waltons” and “Nurse”).
