Jeff Daniels ("The Newsroom") surprised most pundits with his Emmy Award win as Best Drama Actor Sunday night at the 65th annual ceremony. He defeated three-time champ Bryan Cranston ("Breaking Bad") and last year's winner Damian Lewis ("Homeland").
His HBO program is written and produced by Aaron Sorkin, a man whose words have brought Emmy wins for "The West Wing" stars Stockard Channing, Allison Janney, Richard Schiff, John Spencer, and Bradley Whitford.
The Daniels win also means that Jon Hamm ("Mad Men) has tied a different kind of record: the most losses as Best Drama Actor. He is tied at six defeats with Michael C. Hall ("Six Feet Under," "Dexter"), Hugh Laurie ("House"), and Martin Sheen ("The West Wing").
Daniels submitted the pilot episode to the judging panel. He defeated nominees Hugh Bonneville ("Downton Abbey"), Cranston, Hamm, Lewis, and Kevin Spacey ("House of Cards").
