According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ghostbusters III is still going to happen even after the death of Harold Ramis at the age of 69 from autoimmune inflammatory vasculitis. Ramis was set to make a cameo appearance in the third film along with Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd to "pass the torch" to three new Ghostbusters. Director Ivan Reitman will meet with Sony's production team in the next few days to decide how to continue with the project.
This will be the follow-up to Ghostbusters in 1984 and Ghostbusters II in 1989. The script from Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky (The Office) will now be reworked, but Ramis was not substantially involved with the project. He co-wrote the first film and had a "first-dollar gross stake" in the third with Reitman, Aykroyd and Murray, which will now go to his estate. NO deals have been signed yet, and the main people involved may take break-even cuts to get it going.
A source said: "There will be some repercussions. He was always great to bounce something off of, and that will certainly be missed. But it won't affect the script."
Even before Ramis' death, the script was not finished enough for the film to shoot this year.
Meanwhile, Bill Murray spoke about the man he worked with not only in Ghostbusters, but Meatballs, Stripes, Caddyshack and Groundhog Day, along with a National Lampoon show off-Broadway. He said: "He earned his keep on this planet. God bless him."
