divas on PPV each year: 1999

so i decided to go through the PPVs from one year and review each diva match. don't ask me why i'm bored lol. starting with 1999

Royal Rumble - Sable* vs Luna (strap match for the Women's title):
It seems that tethering these two together may have been just the thing to get a good match out of Sable. I think Luna definitely wanted to do a lot more to “punish” Sable for getting the title without taking a single bump. before things started Shane came down and said Sable would have to forfeit since she was too injured to compete. Sable came down and said "ring the bell". a good spot came when Luna was on the outside and Sable forced her to knock her head off the ring post. Luna choked Sable with the strap several times and Sable mostly hit her with it. Luna got a backbreaker and Sable swung Luna around so that she ended up on her stomach. The ending was pretty good as Sable’s fan from the audience (Tori) jumped out of the crowd and clocked Luna from ringside while the ref was distracted by Shane McMahon. This allowed Sable to touch the fourth post and, for someone who never takes bumps, she looks like she’s just been killed. 6/10

WrestleMania XV - Sable* vs Tori (Women's title match):
Despite her cocky heel character Sable still gets cheered and does her grind routine before the match starts. She keeps her distance and taunts for a bit until Tori enters. After a few kicks to the midriff Sable tosses her former fan outside but Tori pulls her out and smacks her face off the apron. Sable is now furious and whips Tori into the guard rail. After she gets up Sable dives at her off the apron and poses for the crowd. Tori tries a sunset flip from the top rope but Sable kicks out and she tries a bridging pin of her own. Tori fluffs a bridge out of the pin and goes for a back slide but Sable kicks out. Tori ducks several kicks from Sable but accidentally clotheslines the referee and counters a Sable bomb attempt before trying one of her own. A monstrous looking woman enters the ring and press slams Tori (King identifies her as Nicole Bass from Howard Stern). A Sable bomb is enough to keep Tori down as Sable retains her title and she panders to the crowd some more. Well this shows just what a sorry excuse for a wrestler the Women’s champion is and I feel sorry for Tori who must have been very limited in what she could do to make up for Sable’s no bumps policy. Despite the lack of proper wrestling and all the botched moves the crowd were pretty into it. 3/10

No Mercy (UK) - Sable vs Tori:
Sable got cheap heat for saying England was cold and damp and that it resulted in her getting a chest cold so she wouldn't be able to wrestle tonight. Nicole Bass will sub for her instead. she pinned Tori after a quick choke slam. N/A

SummerSlam - Ivory* vs Tori (Women's title match):
well apart from lame mixed tag matches the divas go from one big 4 to another with no matches on PPV in between. this is unique since it relies on athleticism by itself. Tori gets the first big move with a powerslam but ends up on the outside getting knocked off the ring post. Ivory drops her on the ropes but Tori comes back with two suplexes and a dropkick. two hair mares from Ivory and the crowd finally pops when she does a Giant Swing. Tori shows off her awesome Tori Plex finisher and hits a crossbody from the middle rope for a two count. she goes for a sunset flip which Ivory kicks out of. she tries again but Ivory counters some way and pins her for the 1-2-3. well the crowd weren't impressed or just weren't used to seeing women who could actually wrestle, good enough match apart from the finish which looked like somebody goofed. Ivory should have used Poison Ivory to finish it or some other big move. 5/10

Unforgiven - Ivory* vs Luna (Hardcore Women's title match):
this takes place entirely backstage and definitely fits the bill of a "Big Lipped Alligator Moment". Ivory blindsides Luna from behind and they brawl a while. Luna drags Ivory into the photocopying room and makes some copies. Ivory tries to pin her while she's inside a barrel and again while she's standing up. Luna splashes her from on top of a stack of boxes. Tori comes in to Luna's aid and tries to hit Ivory with a metal pole but Ivory gets it off her and nails Luna to retain. this would be fun for TV but since these two can actually wrestle they could have had a better normal match. 4/10

Rebellion - Ivory* vs Luna vs Jacqueline vs Tori (Women's title match):
not bad but the announcers seem too busy discussing the Bulldog throwing a bin at Stephanie earlier. weird Tori is face but ignores the fans while Jackie is heel/tweener and high 5s them. strange. Luna mounts Ivory straight away and Tori gets a vertical suplex on the champ. Tori and Luna double team Ivory a few times. Ivory ducks outside and cuts a deal with Jackie to take out the other two. Jackie slams Luna and Tori but they double team her. Ivory comes back in and gets in Jacqueline's face who mounts her with a Thesz press. Ivory locks in a sleeper hold on Jackie and a unique spot sees three simultaneous sleeper holds being locked in until Jackie jumps down and the other three fall comically down. each of them try to pin Ivory but she throws them off onto the ref and clocks Jackie with the belt to retain. 5/10

No Mercy - Ivory* vs Fabulous Moolah (Women's title match):
Match starts off with a dropkick by Ivory followed by a leg drop for a 2 count. Moolah with 2 snapmares by the hair on Ivory. Moolah misses a splash from the bottom rope. Ivory goes for the pin when Mae comes in. Ivory knocks both women out of the ring. Moolah throws Ivory over the safety rail. Ivory grabs the title belt and tries to hit Moolah with it but Mae grabs Ivory's hair. Ivory clocks Mae with the belt. Moolah sneaks up with a rollup out of no where and gets the 3 count. just completely slow and sloppy and undercutting any prestige Ivory had given the title. Moolah does not have her old magic whatsoever. 2/10

Chyna vs Jeff Jarrett* (Good housekeeping match for the IC title):
ok i had to include it since it's historic. very fun to watch as Chyna first hits JJ in the head with a trash can. Outside the ring Chyna clotheslines JJ with the push broom then hits him with a frying pan and a toilet seat. Chyna takes a banana and shoves it in JJ's mouth. Chyna then gets the whip cream out then hits him with the trash can lid. Chyna places JJ on a table and then she gets on the ring apron and comes off but going through it by herself as JJ moved. JJ finally starts to fight back as he hits Chyna with a trash can then tosses her back in the ring. JJ and Kitty are mixing up eggs, milk, and flour in a pot. Chyna comes over and hits JJ's hands making it go in his face. Chyna then dumps the contents of the pot over Kitty's head. JJ comes back in the ring and locks on the figure four on Chyna. Chyna gets to the ropes and the hold is broke. Chyna grabs a pair of tongs and gets JJ right between the legs with it. Chyna throws two pies in JJ's face. Chyna then picks up the kitchen sink and hits him in the head with it for a 2 count. JJ clocks her with the IC belt and pins her. afterwards the ref says he can't use the belt as it is not a household item therefore the match must restart. JJ locks Teddy Long in the figure 4 but Chyna smashes the guitar over his head and pins him to become the first female IC champ. fun match, not great wrestling but entertaining. 5/10

Survivor Series - Team Moolah (Fabulous Moolah, Mae Young, Tori, Debra) vs Team Ivory (Ivory, Jacqueline, Luna, Terri Runnels) (8 woman sudden death tag match):
well Tori is the only woman on her team who can actually wrestle competently but the entrances end up taking longer than the actual match. i don't think you can blame WWF though since it's a pretty obvious botch. Moolah knocks Ivory off the apron and Mae mounts her with some punches. Luna and Jackie botch a double DDT on Tori then follow up with the proper way. quick tags get made and Tori clotheslines Ivory and Luna. Moolah and Mae clothesline Ivory and then it's over as Moolah pins her. you see Terri even get to Ivory and break the pin just as the ref counts to 3 so there was probably more to come. a bit of a catfight afterwards but nothing worth seeing. 2/10

Chyna* vs Chris Jericho (IC title match):
Chyna dropkicks Jericho in the gut while Jericho got stuck in the tree of woe briefly. Chyna does a huricanrana on Jericho then gives him several shots to the face. Jericho clothesline Chyna coming off the ring apron out to the floor. Jericho tosses Chyna into the announce position then pours a drink on her. Jericho exposes the steel on the security wall and slams Chyna at it. Back in ring Jericho comes off the top with a missile dropkick for a 2 count. Jericho does a vertical suplex on Chyna and gets a 2 count after a lame cover. Jericho taunts Miss Kitty by gyrating his hips towards her. Jericho kisses Kitty outside the ring. Kitty jumps on his back but Jericho drops her with a snapmare. Jericho powerbombs Chyna and she kicks out at 2. Jericho misses the lionsault then Chyna starts to make a comeback. Chyna does two handsprings into a back elbow on Jericho then a ddt but only gets a 2 count out of it. Jericho hits Chyna with the belt. Chyna kicks out at 2. Chyna puts the pedigree on Jericho. Jericho kicks out at 2. Jericho puts Chyna in the walls of Jericho. Chyna makes it to the ropes. She counters a superplex attempt with a slightly botched pedigree off the top but it still looks like it hurt. she pins him, good enough match. 6/10

Armageddon - Ivory* vs Jacqueline vs BB vs Miss Kitty (Evening gown in a pool match for the Women's title):
Moolah and Mae Young are the guest referees (who needs a ref to see whether or not someone has their clothes on really?), Kitty and Jacqueline are wearing black, BB red and Ivory purple as always. any hopes of seeing actual wrestling are dashed as Jackie is stripped immediately by Ivory and her bra pops open. Kitty and Ivory double team BB and she's out of her dress. Ivory tries to undo BB's bra but Kitty pulls her back in the pool and unzips her to win the title. afterwards she drops her top to show raw Stacy in prime condition. N/A

Chris Jericho vs Chyna* (IC title match):
brilliant show from these two as Chyna clotheslines Jericho from the apron. he gets a chair but Miss Kitty stops him from using it. Chyna dropkicks the chair into his face and he suplexes her onto the announce table. in the ring Jericho goes for a diving something but gets crotched. Chyna follows up with a handspring elbow and DDT. Jericho traps her in the ropes and dropkicks her injured thumb. yes, i said thumb. he suplexes her then with a backbreaker and then an abdominal stretch. the two collide in mid air for a splash effect and Jericho gets a Lionsault but Chyna lifts her knees up and gets momentum with a swinging neckbreaker and counters a hurricanrana attempt into a powerbomb. Jericho takes off the pad but Chyna slingshots him into it. he gets a reverse superplex but Chyna rolls through into a pin attempt. Jericho finally locks her in the Walls of Jericho and makes her tap out to win the first of many IC titles. great match and Kitty was great as the manager. 8/10
