Welcome to Diva Dirt’s This Week in History, where each week we’ll take a look back at some of the most memorable moments in women’s wrestling from years gone by.
So, join us in taking a trip down memory lane…
September 13th, 2011 | In America’s first large live event since the September 11th attacks, the WWE paid tribute to the lives lost with stirring speeches, heartfelt reflections and an unforgettable performance of the U.S.’s national anthem by Lilian Garcia. In easily one of the most iconic and emotional moments in recent wrestling history, the roster stood side-by-side on the ramp in tribute as Lilian sang the anthem.
September 15th, 2003 | It would be safe to say that on their 80th birthday, most people don’t ask for a wrestling match, but the Fabulous Moolah would have nothing less. The legend got what she wanted, facing and defeating Victoria with a little help from her partner in crime, Mae Young. The night didn’t have a happy ending, though, as Randy “Legend Killer” Orton made an appearance post-match and lived up to his moniker, RKOing Moolah.
September 13th, 2004 | In a storyline that found her being kidnapped, forcibly wed to Kane and impregnated with his child, Lita seemed to have the most unhappy existence of any Diva in history. It all came to a head a few months into Lita’s pregnancy when an attempt to stop Kane’s attack on Gene Snitsky led to Kane being hit from behind, landing on top of Lita and causing her to suffer a miscarriage.
September 17th, 2006 | This one still leaves a lump in our throat. After seven illustrious years, Trish Stratus hung up her boots in front of her hometown crowd after one last match with her greatest rival — Lita. If there was ever a storybook ending in wrestling, it was this one. After seven years and seven title reigns, Trish’s picture perfect run in WWE came to an end. The Divas division has not since seen a star shine so brightly, and perhaps never will. However, with Trish making the occasional appearance — including a 10 week stint as trainer on Tough Enough — we’ve definitely gotten our fix of Stratusfaction over the past few years.
September 14th, 2008 | Two of the biggest bruisers in the Knockouts division were let loose in a Falls Count Anywhere match at No Surrender in 2008. Who’s bright idea was that?! Think about it: Awesome Kong + ODB + Falls Count Anywhere. There was massacre all around ringside as these two ladies took hard knocks from one another. Ultimately, it was Kong who picked up the victory and proved that she was indeed the baddest b*tch in the yard!
