| Subject: Super Smackdown TV Ratings Are in For Tuesday's Live Special! Fri 02 Dec 2011, 12:57 am | |

WWE's live Super Smackdown episode on Tuesday, November 29 scored a 2.00 rating, up from the past three taped episodes on Friday nights (1.87, 1.99, and 1.95). It was down compared to the previous live Smackdown special on August 30 that scored a 2.11 rating.
Smackdown averaged 3.05 million viewers, which was slightly above the Friday night range the previous three weeks. It was below the Aug. 30 live special that averaged 3.20 million viewers.
In all key demographics, Smackdown was about one-tenth of a ratings point below the demo levels on Aug. 30. Among teen males 12-17, the shows were even.
On cable TV Tuesday night, Smackdown ranked #13 in overall viewers, #6 among males 18-34, and #5 among males 18-49. Smackdown was out-drawn by ESPN's Ohio St. vs. Duke college basketball game going head-to-head, A&E's "Storage Wars" episodes, and "Sons of Anarchy" on FX. During the first hour at 8:00 p.m. EST (without head-to-head competition from those shows), Smackdown ranked #1 in m18-49, m18-34, m12-34, and m12-17.
Caldwell's Analysis: An okay performance for a live special that wasn't promoted until the week of the show. Viewership doesn't look that impressive considering Smackdown has been in the 2.9-3.1-million viewers range since the previous live Smackdown special three months ago. Of course, the live Smackdown special helped set in motion the current period of sustained viewership for Smackdown. Prior to the Aug. 30 live special three months ago, Smackdown was in the 2.5-2.9-million viewers range.
The Aug. 30 live special was also during the less-competitive summer and this week's numbers show how competitive Tuesday nights are during the fall season. WWE can run the occasional live special on Tuesdays to increase Smackdown's visibility and relevance, but it appears WWE and Syfy are better off keeping Smackdown on Fridays, where the audience level is the same as a live special. The audience has settled into Fridays, so it's not worth tinkering with the timeslot if they can draw the same audience with a taped show (cheaper to air) on Friday nights. | |
