WWE Raw house show report December 10, 2011 N. Charleston, S.C. at North Charleston Coliseum Report by Henry C. Thompson, II, PWTorch reader
The ring announcer was Eden Stiles. While a part of me was hoping to see Lilian Garcia, Eden did a great job announcing the matches and keeping the crown hyped up.
(1) WWE tag champions Air Boom (Evan Bourne & Kofi Kingston) beat David Otunga & Michael McGillicutty to retain the Tag Titles. Bourne hit the Air Bourne on Otunga for the win. Bourne played ‘face in peril’ for the whole match until Kofi got the tag and cleaned house. The crowd was happy to see Evan Bourne, but Kofi got more love from the crowd. Of note, Air Boom wore matching camouflage attire.
While Eden announced the next match, someone with a black SECURITY t-shirt came down our aisle trailed by a John Cena look-a-like, who sat ringside with a fan. Because the arena was dark, many of us assumed it WAS John Cena, and parents and kids flocked over to him in droves for a picture.
(2) Justin Gabriel beat Heath Slater with what looked like an STO/Rock Bottom combo. Good match between the two. This match was a good reason why WWE should reinstate the Cruiserweight division and title.
(3) Alex Riley beat U.S. champion Dolph Ziggler via DQ; Ziggler retained the U.S. Title. Jack Swagger interfered to cause the DQ and put Riley in the anklelock. Before the match, Ziggler came to ringside solo (no Vickie) and cut a really good heel promo, and did a GREAT job on the mic. Vickie Guerrero was not at the show.
During the post-match beat down, Mason Ryan came and made the save. Riley then got on the mic and challenged Swagger and Ziggler to a tag team match, which they accepted.
(4) Alex Riley & Mason Ryan beat Dolph Ziggler & Jack Swagger in a tag match. Statements from my section during this match included "I didn't know that Bobby Lashley had a white brother!" and “Hey, kids, it’s Batista!”
(5) Randy Orton beat Wade Barrett in a Street Fight with the RKO. Barrett came out first and cut a promo saying that he was a British Street Fighter and could beat any man in the audience. He then turned to an older gentleman, and said "I'll F**** you up, too, old man!" Good, basic street fight which saw each guy hit their signature moves, and also featured a kendo stick and a steel chair. The only head shot was with the kendo stick. Again, Barrett’s promo almost cause a riot in the Coliseum.
[Intermission]
(6) Divas champion Beth Phoenix (w/Natalya) beat Eve to retain the Divas Title. Beth won with the Glam Slam. Nattie and Beth both look strong, yet are still feminine. Eve and Beth told a good story, and had a lot more time here than the Divas get on television. The fans weren't really into this one until Beth hit the Glam Slam for the win, which got a huge pop. I'm really disappointed with the how the WWE treats the Divas division. These women can go, but don’t get the time to show what they can really do.
(7) IC champion Cody Rhodes beat Ted DiBiase to retain the Intercontinental Title. During the intros, Cody cut a good heel promo. He did a good job talking up the importance and significance of the IC Title, calling it the greatest treasure in the world. Ted came out and cut a promo calling the U.S. military the greatest prize in the world, which led to a “USA” chant from the crowd. Another crowd favorite match with these two, and Another crowd favorite match.
Next was the main event for the WWE Title with Punk vs. Del Rio vs. Cena. Ricardo Rodriguez came out first to massive heat. Del Rio came out to boos and some cheers. He did a great job of playing to the crowd, though. He didn't get to cut a promo, but his body language was excellent. John Cena came out second to a massive pop (and some anger at the parents and kids who took pictures with the Cena Impersonator). C.M. Punk came out last to a good pop, but not as good as Cena’s. Charleston, S.C. is definitely Cena Country. Prior to the match, Punk, Cena, and Charles ‘Lil Naitch’ Robinson played a game of Keep Away with Del Rio's scarf before tossing it to the crowd.
(8) WWE champion C.M. Punk beat John Cena and Alberto Del Rio in a three-way match to retain the WWE Title. The finish was Del Rio taking the GTS while Ricardo Rodriguez kept Cena outside of the ring, which resulted in Punk scoring the win. Del Rio ran off to the back after the match, and left Rodriguez alone to take a GTS from Punk and then walk right into the AA from Cena. Punk and Cena shook hands and then posed for the crowd to end the show.
All in all, it was a fun show. On a side note, I wore my Eddie Guerrero t-shirt, and ended up getting a lot of love from the crowd. General Observations: The wrestlers did a great job telling stories with their matches. It was cool to see the matches sans commentary, as it made you pay attention to what was going on in the ring... The show was definitely a ‘Heels on Parade’ night, as Ziggler, Barrett, and Rhodes all cut promos. The best heel promo was from Wade Barrett, who actually had people ready to jump the rails to beat him up... For all the title matches except the WWE Title match, the champions came out first, then the challengers.
Biggest Pops:
(1) Cena and Randy Orton (tie) (2) C.M. Punk (3) Eve
Biggest Heat:
(1) Wade Barrett and Cody Rhodes (tie) (2) Dolph Ziggler (3) Otunga and McGillicutty ---------------------------------- What do you think of these results? | |
