The Smackdown Streak is over. After five consecutive weeks of heightened ratings in the 2.11-2.18 range, the Friday, February 17 Smackdown scored a 1.95 rating, down 8.5 percent compared to the previous week.
It was the first Smackdown episode below 2.11 since the first episode of the year on January 6.
Smackdown averaged 2.95 million viewers, down 9.4 percent compared to an average of 3.26 million viewers on Feb. 10. It was the first Smackdown below three million viewers since Jan. 6.
On cable TV Friday night, Smackdown ranked #5 in overall viewers, #6 among males 18-34, and #4 among males 18-49. The first hour was #1 among m18-49, topping the NBA game on ESPN. Overall, though, "Gold Rush" on Discovery Channel continued to dominate Friday nights. Also, Disney Channel offered a Friday night original movie that drew 4.3 million viewers.
The impact of the Disney movie shows up in the males 12-17 and males 12-34 demographics, which were down one-tenth and two-tenths of ratings point, respectively.
Smackdown also took a hit among older adults. Smackdown's m18-49 rating was down two-tenths, the m18-34 demo was down nearly three-tenths (21 percent), and all adults 18-34 & 18-49 were down one-tenth.
Caldwell's Analysis: Friday's episode actually had more buzz than recent episodes due to Randy Orton being removed from Elimination Chamber and Santino winning a battle royal that WWE promoted in advance. But, Smackdown also followed a poorly-rated Raw episode. Sometimes, it seems, Smackdown will get Raw viewers if they missed Monday's show. Other times, such as this week, Smackdown suffers if Raw is down due to a general lack of interest in WWE's product on a particular week. Since every demo was down, Smackdown wasn't able to "soften the blow." | |
