The Comedy Actress race used to be won by the same leading lady repeatedly. Mary Tyler Moore took home three Emmys in the 1970s for her self-titled show as did "All in the Family" star Jean Stapleton. More recently, Candice Bergen collected five trophies for "Murphy Brown" beginning in 1989 and Helen Hunt ("Mad About You") then won four straight.
However, after Patricia Heaton picked up two in a row for "Everybody Loves Raymond" in 2000 and 2001, there has been a different winner each year. The first of these was Jennifer Aniston ("Friends," 2002) while the most recent was Melissa McCarthy ("Mike & Molly"). To see all the single ladies in between VIEW GALLERY
Among those McCarthy defeated last year was 2007 winner Tina Fey ("30 Rock") and defending 2010 champ Edie Falco ("Nurse Jackie"). All three of them are back in the running this year but rank well behind their other four competitors.
Leading this year's race is Julia Louis-Dreyfus who won this award in 2006 for "The New Adventures of Old Christine." She contends now for the first season of "Veep" and with the backing of six Experts and six Editors as well as a plurality of Users leads with odds of 17 to 10.
Her closest rival is Amy Poehler who hopes that third time proves the charm as she is nominated again for "Parks and Recreation." With the support of four Experts, one Editor and a sizeable number of Users, she has odds of 3 to 1 to prevail.
The two other nominees are Emmy newcomers and both contend for the freshman seasons of their hits shows. Zooey Deschanel ("New Girl") has three Experts and two Editors backing her bid and odds of 9 to 2. Lena Dunham reaped four bids for writing, directing, producing and starring in "Girls." However, she has odds of only 14 to 1 in this race. | |
