"Political Animals," USA Network's attempt at prestige television, won't be returning for a second round. The Greg Berlanti-created limited series, which was originally slated for a six-episode run with the possibility of more should ratings demand them, starred Sigourney Weaver as Elaine Barrish, the recently divorced Secretary of State and former First Lady.

Despite obvious ambitions, parallels to the Clintons and an impressive cast that also included Carla Gugino, Ciarán Hinds, Ellen Burstyn and Adrian Pasdar, the soapier-than-expected show netted only lackluster ratings, averaging 3.2 million viewers over its run. Today, the network released the following statement to TVLine:

We are proud of "Political Animals," our miniseries that attracted critical acclaim and impacted the cultural conversation this summer. It was a pleasure to work with Greg Berlanti and Laurence Mark and a powerful cast led by Sigourney Weaver. We look forward to collaborating again with these immensely talented creatives.

This marks the latest in a series of cancellation/non-renewal announcements from USA this week. Yesterday, the network announced that after two seasons "Fairly Legal" won't be coming back for a third. The San Francisco-set series starred Sarah Shahi as a mediator working at a firm owned by her late father. USA told Deadline: "Sarah Shahi is undoubtedly a star and we’re thrilled she’ll be joining our sister network NBC on 'Chicago Fire.' We are proud of 'Fairly Legal' and thank the very talented cast and crew for two fantastic seasons." Shahi recently booked a guest arc on the firemen drama.

Freshman drama "Common Law," which starred Michael Ealy and Warren Kole as bickering cops, also got cut after failing to build a following. On Twitter Wednesday, USA's SVP of Research Ted Linhart confirmed the cancellation.

On a more positive note, "Suits" was renewed for a third season in October, while "Royal Pains," "White Collar" and "Covert Affairs" were re-upped in September. A renewal for "Burn Notice" is expected soon.

USA also has recently announced the midseason premieres of the current runs of "Suits" (Thursday, Jan. 17), "White Collar" (Tuesday, Jan. 22) and "Necessary Roughness" (Wednesday, Jan. 23).
