85th Annual Academy Award Nomination List! Oscar nominees les miserables lincoln zero dark thirty argo entertainment news

http://www.goldderby.com/news/3830/oscars-nominations-academy-awards-lincoln-life-of-pi-argo-zero-dark-thirty-django-unchained-movies-entertainment-news-43467580.html

"Lincoln," Steven Spielberg's historical biopic about the passing of the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery, is the top nominee at the Academy Awards with 12 bids including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. "Lincoln" has swept the nominations throughout the season, also receiving the most bids at SAG, Critics' Choice, the Golden Globes, and BAFTA. It is the director's most nominated film since "Schindler's List" in 1993.

Though Spielberg has three Oscars (Director and Picture for "Schindler's," Director for "Saving Private Ryan"), no actor has ever won for his films, but this year three will have a chance to break that sreak: "Lincoln" contends for Best Actor (Daniel Day-Lewis), Best Supporting Actor (Tommy Lee Jones), and Best Supporting Actress (Sally Field).

"Life of Pi" follows close behind with 11 nominations, including Picture and Director (Ang Lee). Of the top Oscar nominees, it is the only one shut out of the acting categories, but the visually bold shipwreck drama earned nods in multiple craft categories, including Cinematography, Visual Effects, Sound Editing, and Sound Mixing.

"Silver Linings Playbook" had a surprisingly strong showing with eight bids, including Picture, Director (David O. Russell), and Adapted Screenplay. It is also nominated in all four acting races, including a surprise Supporting Actress nod for Jacki Weaver.

Tom Hooper's musical adaptation "Les Miserables" earned just seven nominations, well south of the 11 we previously forecast. It's nominated for Best Picture, Best Actor (Hugh Jackman), and Best Supporting Actress (Anne Hathaway), though Hooper was snubbed in the Best Director race.

Kathryn Bigelow made history in 2009 by becoming the first woman to win Best Director (for "The Hurt Locker"), but she won't have a chance to repeat for "Zero Dark Thirty." She was left out of that category this year. The film nevertheless earned five nominations, including Picture, Actress (Jessica Chastain), and Original Screenplay.

Ben Affleck was another surprise omission. His latest film, "Argo," is up for a better-than-expected seven awards, including Picture, Supporting Actor (Alan Arkin), and Adapted Screenplay, but Affleck himself failed to earn a Directing nod despite much speculation that he could actually win that race.

Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained" did better than expected, with five nominations including Picture and Supporting Actor (Leonardo DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz, and/or Samuel L. Jackson). Tarantino was not nominated for Director, but earned a bid for Original Screenplay.

"Amour" earned a nomination for Foreign Language Film and is the expected frontrunner in that race. It is also up for Actress (Emmanuelle Riva) and Original Screenplay, as we predicted. But it also earned another pair of major surprise bids: Picture and Director (Michael Haneke).

"Beasts of the Southern Wild" also surprised with four nominations. It is nominated for Picture, Actress, and Adapted Screenplay, but though it did not receive any craft nominations, Benh Zeitlin was recognized in the Best Director category.

Other notable snubs include Maggie Smith ("Best Exotic Marigold Hotel"), John Hawkes ("The Sessions") and Marion Cotillard ("Rust and Bone"). France's top-grossing "The Intouchables" was snubbed for Foreign Language Film, as was Cristian Mungiu's "Beyond the Hills.

85th Annual Academy Award Nomination List! Life of Pi Silver Linings Playbook Lincoln

http://www.goldderby.com/news/3835/oscars-nominations-academy-awards-entertainment-news-73819526.html

Three movies have now emerged as the frontrunners to win the Oscar for Best Picture: "Lincoln," "Silver Linings Playbook" and "Life of Pi." That's because they all earned nominations in the four categories key to victory: Best Picture, Director, Screenplay and Editing. It's rare that a film prevails without all four key areas of support.

The big surprise today was the absence of "Zero Dark Thirty" and "Argo" in the race for Best Director, snubs that radically reduce their hopes of nailing the top prize. Sure, "Driving Miss Daisy" (1989) won without helmer Bruce Beresford getting a bid, but that was a rare exception unlikely to repeat anytime soon.

Kathryn Bigelow was probably left off the list because of controversy surrounding the film's depiction of U.S. military torturing suspected terrorists, but there's no explaining why Ben Affleck got skunked. He recently nabbed noms from the DGA and Golden Globes, so he's considered worthy by other Hollywood award groups. The academy is a notoriously peculiar gang. The directors' branch is small – comprised only of about 300 members who can often be quite snobbish. Witness the inclusion of Michael Hanake ("Amour") in this category. Actors-turned-directors may seem a bit trashy by comparison and they only make the cut on rare occasions, come to think of it.

So what happens next? "Lincoln" seems like a safe choice to bet on. Movies with the most bids win Best Picture about 75% of the time and there's a lot of love for this film and a strong desire by Hollywood to hail the comeback of the town's king, Steven Spielberg. It may be hard to stop.

But if any film can do it, it's "Silver Linings Playbook" – because it's the little movie with Big Heart and voters adore that. Heart is what "The King's Speech" had and "Social Network" didn't. Heart helped "The Artist" to go all the way last year.

"Silver Linings Playbook" has impressive support within the academy's acting branch, which is, with 1,300 members, its largest. The movie scored bids in every one of the four top races – that's only happened a few times in Oscar history. Having strong support within the acting branch is what many pundits believe sparked the upset of "Shakespeare in Love" over "Saving Private Ryan" back in 1998.

But what about "Life of Pi"? Some pundits think it's cursed because it doesn't have an acting nomination, but "Slumdog Millionaire" and "The Last Emperor" won without acting bids. Strangely, this film has been routinely downplayed by leading Oscarologists, who don't take it seriously as a contender. However, consider this: "Pi" and director Ang Lee have pulled strong consistently across all early awards. Other than "Lincoln," it's the only film that's been nominated in the top races by DGA, PGA, Golden Globes, Critics Choice and now Oscars.

Personally, I'd love to think that it's a secret, rumbling volcano. "Pi" and "Beasts of the Southern Wild" are my favorite two films of 2012, but, alas, I'm not an Oscar voter.

Proving that we Oscar forecasters can't always tell which way the wind is blowing, the Academy Awards gave the cold shoulder to a number of seemingly strong contenders

The most notable omission in the top race is "The Master," which reaped three acting bids. Also MIA are three blockbusters with critical cred: "The Dark Knight Rises," "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" and "Skyfall." (Read report on nominations here)

The directing lineup is missing three of the DGA nominees -- Ben Affleck ("Argo"), Kathryn Bigelow ("Zero Dark Thirty") and Tom Hooper ("Les Miserables") -- as well as another helmer of one of the nine Best Picture nominees, Quentin Tarantino ("Django Unchained").

Snubbed save for a makeup/hair nod was "Hitchcock" which stars Oscar winners Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren. And "Anna Karenina," Joe Wright's third film with Keira Knightley picked up just four creative bids.
