86th Annual Academy Award Nomination Thread 'Gravity', 'Hustle', '12 Years' Dominate Oscar-nominations-hustle-12-years-gravity

http://www.goldderby.com/news/5440/oscar-nominations-12-years-a-slave-gravity-american-hustle-news-35746819.html

Gravity" and "American Hustle" came out on top when the Academy Award nominations were announced, picking up 10 nods each. "Gravity's" haul included Picture, Director (Alfonso Cuaron), Actress (Sandra Bullock), and a slew of technical nominations.

"American Hustle" earned bids for Picture, Director (David O. Russell), and all four acting categories: Actor (Christian Bale), Actress (Amy Adams), Supporting Actor (Bradley Cooper), and Supporting Actress (Jennifer Lawrence). Russell continues to outdo himself at the Oscars: the 10 bids for "Hustle" tops the eight earned last year by "Silver Linings Playbook" and the seven earned in 2010 by "The Fighter."

"12 Years a Slave" earned fewer nominations than expected: nine. But those include all of its anticipated bids in top categories: Picture, Director (Steve McQueen), Actor (Chiwetel Ejiofor), Supporting Actor (Michael Fassbender), Supporting Actress (Lupita Nyong'o), and Adapted Screenplay.

"Captain Phillips," "Dallas Buyers Club," and "Nebraska" were the next most nominated films with six apiece. Paul Greengrass's docudrama contends for Picture, Supporting Actor (Barkhad Abdi), and Original Screenplay, though Greengrass was snubbed for director and star Tom Hanks was left out of Best Actor. "Nebraska" earned a surprise bid for director Alexander Payne.

Once again there were nine nominees for Best Picture. Rounding out the list are "Her," "Philomena," and "The Wolf of Wall Street."

"Saving Mr. Banks" had been expected to do well but was left out of major categories, earning only a nomination for its score.

Shocking Oscar nominations snubs: Oprah, Robert Redford, Tom Hanks (x2)

86th Annual Academy Award Nomination Thread 'Gravity', 'Hustle', '12 Years' Dominate OscarBanner

http://www.goldderby.com/news/5442/oscars-nominations-academy-awards-snubs-oprah-redford-hanks-13579086.html

Proving that we Oscar forecasters can't always tell which way the wind is blowing, the Academy Awards gave the cold shoulder to a number of seemingly strong contenders. (See complete list of nominees here)

The most notable omissions in the top race are "Blue Jasmine," which reaped two acting bids, "Inside Llewyn Davis" from Oscar darlings Joel and Ethan Coen and "Saving Mr. Banks," which had been an early frontrunner. (Read report on nominations here).

The acting branch ignored Tom Hanks twice -- for his lead role in "Captain Phillips" and his supporting turn in "Saving Mr. Banks," the latter of which starred Emma Thompson who was also snubbed. Also MIA are Robert Redford ("All is Lost") and Oprah Winfrey ("The Butler"); both led their races in the early part of the season.

The directing lineup is missing one of the DGA nominees -- Paul Greengrass ("Captain Phillips") -- as well as the helmers of three of the other nine Best Picture nominees.

Oscar nominations by the numbers: Which films came out on top?

"American Hustle" and "Gravity" led the Oscar nominations with 10 apiece, the same number we'd predicted them to get. Both are nominated for Best Picture, Director, and Editing, though "Gravity" missed a nomination for Best Original Screenplay. See the complete list of nominations here.

"12 Years a Slave" significantly underperformed based on our predictions. We had given it strong odds to be nominated in 13 categories, but it ended up with only nine, missing bids for Score, Cinematography, and Sound.

Nominees from the 86th annual Academy Awards spoke out about their nominations today. Here's what they said:

Jennifer Lawrence (American Hustle):
"Thank you so much to the Academy for this nomination and for all of the nominations for the film. It's very exciting! Congratulations to my fellow nominees, it's an honor to be nominated in the company of these four actresses who I admire and are so incredibly talented."

Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf Of Wall Street):
"I am deeply humbled by this honor and even happier to share today with Marty, Jonah, Terry as well as this entire cast and crew. The Wolf of Wall Street has been a passion project of mine, and I found the role to be one of the most challenging and rewarding of my career. Congratulations to all of my fellow nominees and thank you to the Academy for this extraordinary recognition."

Meryl Streep (August: Osage County):
"I am so happy for our film that Julia and I have been nominated. We are both so proud of August: Osage County. This honor from the Academy, for which we are truly grateful, will help bring attention to our film from audiences across the country, which is thrilling."

Amy Adams (American Hustle):
"It's a very good thing to wake up to; we were all asleep! Making Hustle was very challenging, so it's really nice that people not only recognized the film but all the actors as well. And I’m so proud to have been in Her too, which has been recognized with a best picture nomination. As for celebrating today, maybe we should go out for a family hike? Then again, everyone looks pretty tired around here right now!"

Bradley Cooper (American Hustle):
"This is so special and surreal and I'm truly honored. The nominations by the Academy for my fellow cast members, David and the film are a true tribute to David O. Russell, our mentor. I feel very lucky and humbled today."

Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club):
"I'm at home in Malibu, having a cup of tea, catching the sunrise. My newborn's walking around…What a great alarm clock and news to wake up to this morning."

Julia Roberts (August: Osage County):
"This was certainly a once in a lifetime experience and the recognition from it is an absolutely thrilling bonus. I simply could not be more excited right now."

Jonah Hill (The Wolf Of Wall Street):
"I am in complete and total shock. I honestly was not expecting this, on a level you can’t even imagine. Again, I’m clearly in shock. I didn’t have a plan for celebrating today because I truly did not expect any of this! But I am going to the Critics’ Choice Awards and will be great to see everyone from the film there tonight. Truly, this is shocking."

Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club):
"Yesterday I was doing jury duty, today I woke up with an Academy Award nomination. Only in America."

Michael Fassbender (12 Years A Slave):
"I'm really chuffed with the Oscar nomination especially being recognised alongside such great actors. It's a real honour."

Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave):
"At no point during filming, in the sweltering heat of New Orleans, did any of us ever foresee the journey this film would take us all on. Steve McQueen created an entire family to tell one man's tale and I am delighted that so many of this family have also been recognized today. I am hugely grateful to the Academy for this great honour, and, of course, to Solomon Northup for sharing his story through his breathtaking book."

Idina Menzel (Frozen):
"This is definitely a dream come true for me. I’m happy for the movie, I’m happy to be a part of the whole thing, and to have a song that really resonate with people is just beyond."

Judi Dench (Philomena)
"This is just the loveliest news. I'm so happy for everybody involved, and so proud to have been part of the wonderful experience that Philomena has been."

Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine):
"My knees buckled. It's the last thing I expected"

June Squibb (Nebraska):
"I didn't expect it! Many people told me (it would happen), and my agent's office were checking all the predictions over and over again. Everyone can say, 'Don't worry, don't worry,' but until it happens you don't believe it.
