Yesterday, PWInsider reported that last night would be Eve’s final match with WWE before leaving the company, and it would be likely that she would be dropping the belt to Kaitlyn, who she has been feuding with since mid-September. As it turns out, that is exactly what happened, though her title loss came a bit earlier than others were expecting. According to the most recent Wrestling Observer Radio, Torres handed in her notice a month ago with the agreement that she would stay on to build up the title feud with Kaitlyn and then drop the belt to her, with the internal expectation being that she would lose the title at the Royal Rumble in two weeks, after a series of matches between the two when Eve would use underhanded tactics to retain the title. Instead, the decision was made for the switch to take place on the milestone Raw – which makes more sense, as it means more viewers would see the change and Kaitlyn’s moment of glory would take place in her home town of Houston, TX. It was a smart move, as the partisan crowd was hotter for the match than it would have likely been compared to the audience at the Rumble in Phoenix, AZ. Besides, fans have been conditioned to a certain extent to not be that bothered about the Divas, so it was unlikely that the match would have generated a massive amount of pay-per-view buys.
Torres’ departure is hardly a surprise. As was pointed out in the November 27, 2012 edition of the Roundup, Eve’s impending nuptials to Rener Gracie would likely cause a shift in priorities in her life. The Gracies tend to like big families, and that means Eve may become a baby factory for a while. In addition, she is forging ahead with her Women Empowered self-defence programme, and has become more enveloped in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu over the years – so much so that she used certain holds in her wrestling repertoire. On top of that, she has mainstream media success by winning NBC’s Stars Earn Stripes show last year – though it was hardly mentioned by WWE, as the show clashed with Raw. As you can see, she has a lot of irons in the fire, and being on the road four days a week with WWE and also being a great media ambassador for the company takes up a lot of her time. Considering she is the only three-time Divas Champion and has worked as both heel and babyface, there isn’t much more for the 28-year old to accomplish. Understandably, it was time to move on, and nobody should hold that against her.
But what sort of legacy will Eve Torres leave? Clearly, she is the top woman in the Divas division, and is a fairly reliable wrestler who can be trusted to go out there and not foul up. However, it’s up for debate as to what sort of mark she will leave. She made her first mark in WWE in October 2007 after entering the Diva Search the previous May, though it took her a while to find a niche, as she was booked in costume contests and bikini face-offs before making her in-ring debut in November 2008, with her first feud being one against Michelle McCool the following year. However, it was another year before she broke out of the shuffle and won the Divas Championship for the first time, beating Maryse for the belt in April 2010. She held the belt for two months but then ended up being the dancing buddy of R-Truth for the rest of the year. As you can tell, for the first three years of her WWE run, there was precious little to talk about.
Things took a turn in January 2011 when she won her second Divas Championship in a four-way at the Royal Rumble before dropping it to Brie Bella in April. From there, Eve sided with Kelly Kelly and was her biggest supporter in her run to the Divas belt, and stood alongside her as they faced the threat of Pin-Up Strong (Beth Phoenix and Natalya) through the rest of the year, receiving a couple of shots at Beth Phoenix for the belt but failed each time.
As with most Divas, Torres had been involved in the past in romance with Chris Masters, but then entered another relationship of sorts with Zack Ryder, with him trying to get with her but things never totally falling into place. In February, she ended up kissing John Cena, signifying the start of a heel turn which saw her humiliated in the ring after admitting that she had been using Ryder and planned to use Cena, though he heard every word. Despite the unpleasant way that she turned heel, she took the bull by the horns and was everywhere in 2012, working as the help for Raw General Manager John Laurinaitis and later SmackDown GM Booker T.
It was the latter executive role which was the reason for her politicking her way into the Night Of Champions match mentioned earlier after Kaitlyn suffered an attack (which we later found out was orchestrated by Eve herself). She ended up facing Layla for the belt and winning the title under the pretence that she was a friend to both women and was being so disingenuous that everyone could tell she was faking it, even though nobody could prove it.
Fending off the challenges of Layla and Kaitlyn, the former’s title challenges dried up, leaving a singles feud which led to last night, where the heel Torres finally got her comeuppance before quitting in a video on WWE’s mobile app.
As pointed out, the first three years of Torres run was pretty bleak until the division thinned out and she subsequently was given more of an opportunity – which she fully seized. However, I doubt she will be remembered as one of the greats. While Ringbelles co-founder Stew Allen is a big fan of hers, this writer could never fully buy into her. Sure, she was better than most of the other Divas, but that is faint praise. For me, Torres’ biggest problem is that I could never connect with her, either as a face or a heel. Don’t get me wrong – she was fine, but she never bowled me over, and this is a feeling which is shared by a number of you reading this.
Earlier today I asked about whether you will miss Eve, and the response was mostly no, with the words ‘overpushed’ and ‘boring’, with another saying that while her skills had improved, it was hard to buy into her character. As a babyface, there was not much to say about Torres – her selling point was that she was attractive and could dance a bit. When she turned heel, she had more scope to play about, but it was still difficult to register any strong emotion for her. Like I say, she was the best all-rounder in the division and a safe hand to hold onto the belt while Kaitlyn improved – which is what happened, as their match last night was their best outing of the lot.
Storyline-wise, the title match last night must have been Kaitlyn’s last chance. After failing to get the job done in the past, there is conceivably only a certain amount of shots that a challenger can have before the feud gets boring, and without some king of development like a title change, this programme was on the verge of getting stale. However, with the 26-year old winning the Divas Championship, it freshens things up… to a certain extent.
No doubt, Kaitlyn having the belt is a great boost for her, but now the question is; how well will she do as champion, given the state of the division she now sits atop of? Had Torres stayed, there may have been enough twists and turns for them to be able to make it to WrestleMania and have a blow-off match there, but with the departure of Eve, that can’t happen. Having Eve there would have also given Kaitlyn more time to settle into the role with a safe pair of hands guiding her along the way. No doubt, Kaitlyn is much better than she was, but she’s not fully there yet – however WWE had little choice but to give her the belt now, as having her lose again would create a stigma over her that she’s a choker, and there was nobody else who was in the position to hold the belt.
Take nothing away from Kaitlyn, she’s worked hard over the last five months both in the ring and in vignettes and promos to make herself as good as possible, and that is to be commended, but she may not be there yet. Hopefully WWE doesn’t pull the plug with her while she is finding her feet, as that will unnecessarily shake her confidence. The next query is who will be her first proper challenger?
Alicia Fox, Rosa Mendes, Aksana, Naomi and Cameron can be eliminated immediately as they are either not over, terrible or both. Natalya seems to be distanced from the ring and when she is there, is a jobber to the stars, while Layla had her chance to be awesome as Divas Champion last year and blew it. If she turns heel, she may have a chance – but as a babyface, she’s a sponge cake with no flavour. That leaves us with Tamina Snuka and AJ Lee.
Snuka would probably be the best choice for a first – and short – programme, as Tamina is alright but nothing spectacular, and having Kaitlyn beat her would be a shot in her arm, as it would be her claiming the scalp of someone who is bigger and of a comparable strength to her. Then Kaitlyn can move on to the logical choice for a long run – her former Chickbusters tag team partner and super-heel AJ Lee.
Kaitlyn is the Divas Champion, while AJ is the most pushed and most over woman on the roster right now. Couple that with their history stemming all the way back to their time on NXT in 2010, with subsequent teaming, arguing, fighting, making up and drifting apart again after AJ’s heel turn, there is plenty there for a video package in the run-up to WrestleMania. Either result would be fine too – if Kaitlyn wins, she gets a major boost by beating the woman who’s been the primary focus of everything in the last 12 months, while if AJ wins, she gets to add the Divas belt to her web of lunacy.
Realistically, this is the best – and only – option. The Divas division is so thin and weak right now that it could be used on a pro-ana site. Should WWE be interested in making the division viable – and the crowd in Houston show that given time, there can be a demand for it – there needs to be an injection of new and fresh faces. There are a few names in NXT that could be used to swell the roster, but it’s unlikely that any of them would be brought in before WrestleMania. For now, the best choice is Kaitlyn v AJ – and that suits me fine. | |
