| Update: WWE has announced that Tshepo Sekhabi (identified by WWE as "the accused party") pled guilty to a wrongful attack on Randy Orton during the July 30 WWE house show in Cape Town, South Africa.
According to WWE's report, Sekhabi's judgment was either paying a fine of 500 Rand (equivalent of $50) or spend 30 days in jail. Sekhabi was also banned from attending any shows on the remainder of WWE's South Africa tour.
Original Report July 31
The "fan" who attacked Randy Orton at Tuesday's WWE Live event in Cape Town, South Africa has been identified as 20-year-old Tshepo Sekhabi, who calls himself “Jozi, the wrestling machine,” according to local news outlet ENCA.
The story notes that Sekhabi quit his job in Johannesburg (where WWE will be touring on August 2 & 3), traveled to Cape Town for the show, and made plans to attack Orton during the show.
“I just don’t like Randy Orton, this was an opportunity for me so I got up there and made a name for myself," Sekhabi was quoted.
TMZ picked up the story, noting that Sekhabi is an aspiring independent wrestler who thought he would get the attention of WWE officials by attacking Orton.
The events unfolded with Sekhabi bypassing security, entering the ring, and low-blowing Orton from behind as Orton was celebrating a victory over Big E. Langston. Orton then came across the ring to kick Sekhabi in the head before Sekhabi was hauled away by security.
Sekhabi was arrested, banned from the venue (Grand West Arena in Cape Town), and left the event with a black-eye from Orton's kick.
This prompted a WWE spokesperson to respond to a question about whether Orton plans to apologize for kicking Sekhabi in the face.
“Randy Orton was the victim in this incident and suffered an injured groin," said WWE.
WWE also noted that Orton "is considering pressing charges" against Sekhabi.
Orton did wrestle Wednesday night in Cape Town without incident. | |
