WWE Smackdown TV taping report January 7, 2014 Philadelphia, Pa. Report by Joe Kratz, PWTorch correspondent
Smackdown Spoilers 1/10/14
- Smackdown started with an announcement that the TV main event of the evening will be The Shield vs. CM Punk and the New Age Outlaws in a six-man tag.
(1) The Usos vs. Erick Rowan & Luke Harper went to a No Decision. Back and forth tag match, which the crowd was into until the no decision. Too much chaos between all four participants outside of the ring caused the ref to throw out the match.
Afterwards, Bray Wyatt and Daniel Bryan cleaned house. Half of the crowd chanted "Yes!" and the other chanted "No!" when Daniel came out with Bray. It's a shame that they've effectively neutralized his organically hot babyface run with the new alliance, subservient role, and drab Wyatt Family clothing. Sabotage at its most blatant.
- They threw to a backstage interview with Randy Orton and Vickie Guerrero. I think he said something about being on Miz TV this Monday night?
- Speaking of Miz TV, tonight's guest was Big Show. They talked up Brock Lesnar's monster image and how Big Show manhandled him in their brief encounter this past Monday. Show went on about how he was tired of Brock Lesnar and how he thinks he's the baddest man on the planet. If you watch this episode on Friday night, be sure to listen closely for a man in the crowd to yell "He's better than you!" in which case Big Show pointed him out and replied "Maybe he is." That man would be me. Selfish plug aside, Paul Heyman saved the segment by announcing Brock Lesnar vs. Big Show at the Royal Rumble. He suggested that Lesnar isn't a hard man to find if Big Show wants a piece of him before then. Big Show was hugely over and Heyman will always have incredible heat so long as he can breathe.
(2) Rey Mysterio & Sin Cara & Los Matadores beat Curtis Axel & Ryback & the Real Americans in an eight-man tag match. Boring match until the end, where Rey picked up the pinfall victory with the 6-1-9 and top rope splash on Swagger to pop the crowd. Los Matadores's mascot had a high-flying spot as well that popped the crowd. Mysterio is still very much over although I'm wondering if he can "go" anymore. He has done the same set of moves each match since he's been back.
(3) WWE World Hvt. champion Randy Orton pinned IC champion Big E. Langston. This was a 14-minute, plodding match that ended after an RKO for the pin. Serviceable given Langston's inexperience in this position. The crowd was behind Big E. and Orton got good heat.
- After the match, they threw to the back for a Bray Wyatt promo, which surprisingly turned into a Bray/Daniel Bryan promo. Short but sweet.
(4) Xavier Woods pinned Fandango. Woods has effectively stolen Brodus Clay's gimmick entirely. It's great to know that gimmicks are interchangeable and is a reminder that management thinks wrestlers are, too. This match ended in short order with a roll-up by Woods.
Afterwards, there was a scrum with Fandango, Woods, R-Truth, Summer Rae, and The Funkadactyls. Xavier and Truth cleared the ring and stood tall afterward.
- C.M. Punk backstage promo. He was joined by the New Age Outlaws as they knocked The Shield and hyped the main event in a great promo. The crowd popped big for both acts.
- Before the main event started, The Shield cut a promo, one that Roman Reigns started for a change by declaring himself the New Best in the World. New Age Outlaws did their usual pre-match schtick, which was hugely over with the audience. Big pops for all involved.
(5) The Shield (U.S. champion Dean Ambrose & Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns) beat C.M. Punk & New Age Outlaws in a six-man tag match. NAO got the typical "You still got it!" chant, which I'm not entirely sold on. Road Dogg has timing issues and Billy Gunn is still clunky. Excellent TV main event, though, that ended with an awkward-looking spear from Reigns to Billy Gunn. | |
