Flair Rejects WWE Deal
Ric Flair recently rejected an offer from WWE to return.
Over the last year or so, Vickie Guerrero has surprised many people by becoming an extremely effective general manager. She's drawn as much heel heat as anyone that has been put into that role. With the success of the move, WWE decided to capitalize on things by shifting her over to the Raw brand.
That left an opening for the Smackdown general manager spot.
WWE decided on two names as a possible replacement for her on Smackdown. The company decided to reach out to two former NWA World Heavyweight Champions to try to fill the role. WWE made offers to both Ric Flair and Dusty Rhodes.
Dusty Rhodes was against the move since he does not want to travel around the country. The traveling was what prompted him to resign from his position as a writer with the team. He is still currently working for WWE as an executive in Florida Championship Wrestling.
Ric Flair was offered $250,000 to take on the role of Smackdown general manager. However, the Hall of Fame wrestler declined the offer.
There's no word yet as to which wrestler was contacted first by WWE.
When Ric Flair and Dusty Rhodes rejected the offers, the company then turned to Theodore Long as the replacement.
Batista Returning Early
There's some concerns within the company that Batista may be returning just a little too soon.
Not too long ago, Batista contacted WWE about his rehabilitation process. He informed the company that he was progressing much faster than was initially expected. Batista asked the company to put him back on the road.
With the company hoping for a nice boost, the decision was made to bring him back for the upcoming Backlash pay per view. To give him some instant momentum, WWE has decided to put him into a 6 man tag team match (teaming with Triple H & Shane McMahon against Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes, and Ted DiBiase).
Batista was still in tremendous shape. In fact, many believe that he's as big as he has ever been right now. However, many people did notice that he was limping a bit.
There are those that believe that Batista's recent financial issues may have factored into his decision to return earlier than expected.
The former World Heavyweight Champion has been working out down in Florida Championship Wrestling to help get rid of the ring rust.
ECW Wrestlers Kept Off Wrestlemania 25
Wrestlemania 25 is the biggest wrestling event of the year in the eyes of many fans around the world. It is also considered the biggest wrestling event in the eyes of professional wrestlers from around the world. For most wrestlers, it is the ultimate goal to be a part of the actual Wrestlemania card. That is a clear indicator that you have made it in the profession when you can work a match at the big show. To work so hard in the year only to miss the biggest show of the year is a huge let down. Several of the stars in ECW who had a chance at being in the event were disappointed that they were kept off of Wrestlemania 25 this year.
When John Morrison and the Miz were paired together in a tag team, a lot of wrestling fans were complaining that the company had simply put them together because the writers could not come up with anything else for them. Despite an awful beginning, the two wrestlers somehow managed to make things work and became one of the most entertaining acts in the entire company. WWE knew they were gaining some steam with the audience, so they decided to capitalize on it by having the duo appear consistently on Raw, Smackdown, and ECW every week. Since they were being used so much, many wrestling fans were under the assumption that they were guaranteed a spot at Wrestlemania 25. There were many that were pushing to see Miz & John Morrison involved in the Money in the Bank match. However, WWE had other plans. The company wanted to book them in a title unification match against Carlito & Primo Colon for both sets of tag team titles. At the very last minute, though, WWE made the decision to cut the match from the actual pay per view. The match was still done, but it was a dark match that took place before Wrestlemania 25.
It didn't take too long for wrestling fans to know that Jack Swagger was on the fast track to success in WWE. When he was developing in Florida Championship Wrestling, the company decided to reward him by naming him the very first ever FCW Florida Heavyweight Champion. Within 3 months of being called up to the ECW roster, the former All American wrestler was rewarded with an ECW Heavyweight Championship reign. WWE doesn't value the title all that much now a days, but wrestling fans still believed that Jack Swagger was going to be wrestling on Wrestlemania 25 since Vince McMahon was such a huge fan of his. Even if the company wasn't going to put an ECW Heavyweight Championship on the big event, they still could put Jack Swagger in the Money in the Bank match. A good showing in that match would have done wonders for Jack Swagger's credibility (and the credibility of the ECW title itself). Unfortunately, though, WWE decided not to have Jack Swagger working any match at Wrestlemania 25 (he was used as a lumberjack during the tag team title unification dark match). A couple of people backstage did not want Jack Swagger working such an important match at an important event because he's still new to the business.
The same problem that Jack Swagger faced also caused problems for Evan Bourne. Over the last year, Evan Bourne had managed to captivate the audience and became an immensely popular character thanks in part to his high flying antics. It was evident that the company was strongly behind the young wrestler when he started making more and more appearances on the Raw brand. Evan Bourne's momentum was hampened, though, when he suffered an injury shortly after the Cyber Sunday pay per view. Despite having to miss several months of action, Evan Bourne still had enough popularity to where wrestling fans were hoping to see him added to the Money in the Bank match. With his penchant for aerial moves, it appeared to be the ultimate time for the company to give him a huge momentum boost with a daring high spot. Unfortunately, that was not to be. The company decided that it would be best to keep him off of the pay per view since he was such a new wrestler.
