Umaga Released On Sunday night, Umaga was involved in a leather strap match against CM Punk at the Extreme Rules pay per view.
Generally, WWE only gives a coveted pay per view spot to wrestlers that they deem are vital to the immediate success of their company.
That's why you rarely see guys like Jesse, Festus, Dolph Ziggler, Curt Hawkins, Zack Ryder, etc. doing matches at pay per view.
Despite being defeated by CM Punk at the pay per view, Umaga was still viewed as being important to get a spot at Extreme Rules.
That was his position with the company on Sunday night.
On Monday, Umaga was without a job. WWE had released the Samoan star from his contract.
When developmental wrestlers and lower card wrestlers get released, there aren't a lot of questions that are asked. Most wrestling fans generally assume that the release was simply because the company felt that the wrestlers aren't good enough.
Umaga is not a developmental wrestler. Nor is he a lower card wrestler. Umaga is classified as an upper midcard wrestler that can be elevated into the main event scene for a period of time.
So, now that he is released, he leaves behind a trail of questions as to why WWE decided to get rid of a guy that could have been used in the main event scene.
Umaga has violated the WWE drug policy before, so that can't be ruled out as a possible reason for his dismissal. He was one of the many wrestlers that received illegal drugs from an online pharmacy.
Like a lot of other WWE stars, injuries have become a factor for Umaga. The former WWE Intercontinental Champion has suffered from a variety of injuries (including a torn PCL) over the last few years.
There's also rumblings that Umaga has been dissatisfied with the way that the company has been using him. Word has it that he feels that he's stuck entirely in the midcard division.
In a couple of months, Umaga will be free to work for another wrestling company if he chooses to go that route. The 14 year veteran does have outside business ventures, but there's no word on if the money that he makes from that is enough to sustain his livelihood.
Umaga is a good in-ring performer that also has name value because he's worked in some high profile programs (including a main event program with John Cena) in WWE.
That means that TNA is an option for him. Dixie Carter and Jeff Jarrett are constantly on the lookout for wrestlers that can help their company continue to grow.
Umaga can be immediately thrown into the mix with the likes of Samoa Joe, Scott Steiner, Kurt Angle, Sting, AJ Styles, Abyss, and Matt Morgan. Those would all be interesting matchups to see.
Dreamer's New Contract Word going around is that Tommy Dreamer has signed a brand new contract with WWE.
The current ECW Heavyweight Champion is rumored to have signed a new deal that stretches between 3 years and 5 years. The belief is that he was given the title at Extreme Rules as a reward for his loyalty to the company.
At just 38 years of age, Tommy Dreamer should still be able to work matches for the next 3 years. Since WWE generally gives out three year deals (longer deals are for the main event wrestlers), the belief is that if Tommy Dreamer signed a 5 year deal, then the contract could also provide the ECW original with a front office job in the next few years.
Lashley Defends Kennedy Bobby Lashley has come out in defense of Mr Kennedy.
When Mr Kennedy was released by WWE, a lot of wrestling fans were quick to accuse him of being a poor in-ring worker who was a threat to injure his fellow workers. Mr Kennedy was pegged as someone that worked too stiff.
However, that's not the case, according to former ECW World Heavyweight Champion, Bobby Lashley. The following is what he had to say about Mr Kennedy.
Quote:
"If somebody says that (Kennedy worked too stiff), I think they need to get a reality check, man. We're wrestlers, we're not dancers. We're not children. If someone touches you a little harder in a friggin' wrestling match and you go crying about it, that's ridiculous." |
Quote:
"I had several matches with Kennedy and I never left the match and said, 'Oh, man, you hit me too hard.' I liked the way he worked." |
Quote:
"I didn't think he was too stiff. I worked a lot of people who are top guys that are a lot stiffer than him." |
CM Punk Wins Title At Extreme Rules, the eyes of the wrestling world were focused firmly on Jeff Hardy's chase of the World Heavyweight Championship. With rumors of his departure running rampant, many were hoping that a title win would shed some light on his situation.
For many that want so badly to believe that Jeff Hardy is going to immediately sign another three year deal with WWE, seeing him win the belt would have enabled them to finally stop holding their breaths.
WWE was fully aware of this, so they decided to give the fans exactly what they want.
Jeff Hardy won the World Heavyweight Championship from Edge at Extreme Rules.
The fans got exactly what they wanted. However, it wouldn't last more than a few minutes.
Stunned fans saw CM Punk coming out to cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase after the main event match. He had his eyes set on the World Heavyweight Championship.
At the end of Extreme Rules, CM Punk emerged as the new World Heavyweight Champion.
The record books might show that CM Punk is now a 2 time World Heavyweight Champion. It sure as hell doesn't feel that way, though.
CM Punk reminds me a lot like Ronnie Garvin.
For those of you that don't know, Ronnie Garvin was easily one of the least heralded NWA World Heavyweight Champions in the history of the business.
Ronnie Garvin was not built up as a world champion. He was simply a midcard wrestler that didn't have a lot of momentum, so when the company decided to put the NWA World Heavyweight Championship around his waist, question marks were raised.
It turns out that he was simply given the belt so that Ric Flair could win it back.
You get the same feeling with CM Punk now.
For the record, that's not a knock on CM Punk and his abilities. The guy is great in the ring, and he's quite underrated on the mic. He's more than capable of being a main event performer.
The knock is on WWE management for not building the guy up as a main event wrestler before giving him the belt. As a wrestling fan, it's hard to buy CM Punk as the World Heavyweight Champion right now.
It feels as if his title win was designed to push the Money in the Bank match as opposed to pushing CM Punk.
If WWE wanted to think long term, it would be wise for them to build up CM Punk as a credible main event wrestler.
To do so, they need to give him credible wins over credible main event wrestlers. Fortunately for everyone involved, there are plenty of credible main event wrestlers that CM Punk can work with on Smackdown.
- Chris Jericho - This guy draws heel heat as easily as most of us breathe. WWE needs to use his powers right now to elevate CM Punk as a champion.
- Edge - As the former champion, it would make sense for Edge to challenge for the belt again. He's good enough to help make CM Punk a credible champion. Edge also doesn't appear to be a guy that is concerned about his spot in the company, so he's likely to help out.
- Jeff Hardy - If he doesn't opt to leave WWE, then Jeff Hardy could be used to work a program with CM Punk. Some gimmick matches between the two should do wonders for CM Punk.
- Rey Mysterio - Most people aren't able to think outside of the box and see two babyfaces feuding with one another. If WWE built this up as two good guys fighting over a belt (that is supposed to be highly coveted), then they'll have an entertaining program.
- Undertaker - Undertaker only has a little bit of time left in the industry. They might as well use his legendary status to elevate the next generation of main event wrestlers.
The tools are there for WWE to elevate CM Punk. It's up to them if they want to do it or not.
Steamboat Still Wrestling Ricky Steamboat received a farewell from the audience during a big 10 man tag team match on Raw.
However, you can still see him wrestling in a WWE ring.
The former NWA World Heavyweight Champion worked a match at a house show last weekend that wasn't advertised. Ricky Steamboat is advertised for an upcoming house show in Pennsylvania. He's also scheduled to work some more house shows throughout the next few weeks.
