The trial of accused killer Corey Miller is underway. Opening statements were given this morning in a Gretna courtroom, in which Miller also known as rapper C-Murder is accused of killing teenager Steve Thomas at a Harvey nightclub in 2002.
Thomas' father, George Thomas, is the prosecution's first witness. He told jurors his son idolized C-Murder and his brothers, and had posters of the rappers all over his bedroom wall. He tearfully told the jury that when he heard Miller was arrested he threw all "that junk" in the garbage.
Prosecutor David Wolff told jurors during opening statements that Thomas used a fake ID to get into the Platinum Club to see his idol. Wolfe says, for some reason, Thomas got into an altercation with Miller and his entourage and Miller pulled out a gun and shot the teenager in the chest.
Defense attorney Ron Rakowsy told the jury there was hundreds of people at the club that night, yet not one mention was made of Miller on 911 calls. Rakowsky says Jefferson Parish detectives were actually looking for someone else that night.
If Miller is convicted, he could be sentenced to life in prison.
