NFL star Ben Roethlisberger is set to become the next celebrity to host an episode of Monday Night Raw for WWE next week.
Ben Roethlisberger on WWE There's not too many instances where you can smoothly transition from a controversial civil rights activist to a professional football star. Apparently, the world of professional wrestling has figured out how to accomplish just that. This week's episode of Raw was hosted by Reverend Al Sharpton, who garnered some negative reactions from the audience when he was introduced. During the show, WWE announced that Ben Roethlisberger was going to be next week's host. Ben Roethlisberger is an NFL quarterback who helped the Pittsburgh Steelers win the Super Bowl during his second season in the league. The 27 year old is currently considered to be one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. The 11th overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft won't be coming alone, though. He is expected to bring his entire offensive line with him.
Impact on the Ratings When WWE looks around for celebrities and athletes to host Raw, the company is basically looking for someone that can draw some interest into their products (whether it's television ratings or media attention). Celebrities like Shaquille O'Neal and Bob Barker worked wonders for WWE. Both were entertaining, and they were able to draw in people who wouldn't normally watch the show. Ben Roethlisberger is a very popular football player, but there's a very good chance that he's not going to make a huge impact on the ratings. That's not a personal shot at Ben Roethlisberger. It's just that most football fans are going to be tuned into Monday Night Football. The game between the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings is expected to be one of the most watched games of the year because the legendary Brett Favre is going up against his former team. Ben Roethlisberger isn't going to be enough to draw football fans away from that game.
Potential Problems One of the potential problems that WWE may run into when they book athletes who are currently in the middle of a season is that they could be injured prior to the show. Next Sunday, Ben Roethlisberger and his teammates are going to be playing against the San Diego Chargers. Injuries are a part of the game, and there's always a chance that the quarterback could get injured. If that happen, then WWE is going to have to come up with a quick solution.
Possible Roles At 6'5", 245 pounds, Ben Roethlisberger can match up against most of the superstars in WWE. Plus, he's going to have five of the biggest players on his team with him. However, don't get your hopes up that these guys are going to get physically involved. There's a very good chance that the Pittsburgh Steelers made sure that these guys would not risk any sort of injuries before they signed off on the idea. There's absolutely no way that the franchise puts 6 starters from their offensive unit into that situation without reassurance that they're not going to get hurt. The season is much more valuable than whatever exposure that the player generates.
