WWE posted less-than-impressive - yet expected - preliminary PPV buys for the Hell in a Cell and Vengeance PPVs in the month of October.

WWE's monthly business figures released this week indicate HIAC and Vengeance combined to draw 302,000 buys. HIAC drew more buys three weeks before the Vengeance event, although Vengeance could increase after all buys are accounted for. (Vengeance occurred on October 23 and WWE's preliminary estimate is through Oct. 31.)

The two events averaged 151,000 buys with a domestic split of 82,000 buys and an international split of 69,000 buys. The domestic split is typically 60-65 percent, but the preliminary estimate indicates only 54 percent for domestic buys.

Survivor Series and next month's TLC PPV will be included with the October PPVs in fourth quarter reporting. Fourth quarter 2010 averaged 196,000 buys and fourth quarter 2009 averaged 232,000 buys, which was at a $5 lower price point.

Caldwell's Analysis: HIAC and Vengeance were part of a brutal stretch of three PPVs in five weeks, along with Night of Champions, and these numbers indicate WWE needs to start cutting PPVs from the line-up. WWE has PPV deals locked in with distributors and the events still generate revenue to help with the quarterly reports, but the argument remains that 10-12 events (or 4-6 if WWE got serious about PPVs) that are carefully promoted, have a reason to exist beyond popping up on the calendar, and occur in the natural cycle of feuds would draw more revenue over time than WWE taking a quantity over quality approach. Also, WWE has shifted to a TV-first rather than PPV-first company, and it's reflected in these initial PPV estimates for October.
