Kanye West, who led with the most bids in 2004 (10), 2005 (8) and 2007 (8), could top the list of nominees again this year. He has two albums in contention, the critically acclaimed “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” and “Watch the Throne,” his collaboration album with Jay Z. Either could contend for Album of the Year. West has lost this race three times. His single “All of the Lights," which features a slew of industry favorites, is a frontrunner for both Record and Song of the Year bids as well as Rap Song and Rap/Sung collaboration. Don’t be surprised if West is once again the leading nomination contender. If that happens, West might finally win Album of the Year after losing that prize in 2004, 2005 and 2007.
If voters have cooled on West, then a combination of artists could lead the nominations. In 2002, eight artists -- Norah Jones, Nelly, Ashanti, Sheryl Crow, Avril Lavinge, Raphael Saadiq, Eminem and Bruce Springsteen -- led with five bids apiece. This year, Adele, Jason Aldean, Nicki Minaj, Taylor Swift, Foster the People, Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars will likely reap multiple nominations across the pop, rap, country and general fields.
Adele will surely contend in Album of the Year (“21”), Record and Song of the Year (“Rolling In the Deep”), Pop Performance (“Someone Like You”), Pop Album and Short Form Music Video (“Rolling In the Deep”).
Jason Aldean is a possibility for Album of the Year (“My Kind of Party”), Record and Song of the Year, Country Song and Country Duo or Group (all for “Don’t You Wanna Stay” w/Kelly Clarkson).
Nicki Minaj is vying for nods in Album of the Year (“Pink Friday”), Record of the Year (“Super Bass”), Best New Artist and Best Rap Album (“Pink Friday”). She could show up in the rap field again for “Moment 4 Life,” a duet with Drake.
Taylor Swift is hoping to land nods for Album of the Year and Best Country Album (“Speak Now”). Her single “Back to December” may show up in Record and Song of the Year and Country Performance.
Alternative newbies Foster the People could contend in Album of the Year and Alternative Album (“Torches”), Best New Artist and Record and Song of the Year (“Pumped Up Kicks”).
Despite a high profile year, Lady Gaga may not reap many bids. MTV Video Music Award voters only gave her two wins while she didn’t take anything at the American Music Awards. After being snubbed last year in Record and Song of the Year for “Bad Romance,” don’t be surprised if Gaga is only nominated for Pop Performance (“You and I”) and Pop Album (“Born This Way”).
