| Subject: Feb 21st Super Smackdown Bombs, Fewest Viewers Since 2010! Fri 24 Feb 2012, 12:24 am | |

WWE's live Super Smackdown episode on Tuesday, February 21 scored a 1.67 rating, down 14 percent from the most-recent Friday episode on February 17 and down 22 percent compared to Smackdown's recent hot streak on Friday nights.
It was the lowest Smackdown rating since July 1, 2011 and in the Top 5 for lowest Smackdown rating ever on Syfy.
Smackdown averaged 2.33 million viewers, the fewest viewers for a first-run Smackdown since New Year's Eve 2010 (Dec. 31, 2010) with 2.21 million viewers. Other than NYE 2010, it was the fewest viewers ever for an episode of Smackdown on Syfy.
On cable TV Tuesday night, Smackdown ranked #17 on cable TV, #12 among males 18-34, and #10 among males 18-49.
Smackdown's demographic ratings were close to the previous Friday episode, but being on a more competitive Tuesday night hurt the show's overall rating.
-- The previous live Smackdown episode on November 29 scored a 2.00 rating and averaged 3.05 million viewers. Each live Smackdown episode has declined since the first live special in December 2010. (12/21/10 - 2.53 rating, 8/30/11 - 2.20 rating, 11/29/11 - 2.00 rating, 2/21/12 - 1.67 rating.)
Caldwell's Analysis: Unfortunately for Smackdown, which had been on a roll on Friday nights, you could see this coming for a number of reasons. (1) WWE viewers are habitual. They checked out the previous live Smackdowns for the novelty and specialness, but that's worn off and viewers needed substance this time. (2) Smackdown wrestlers are featured so-often on Monday nights that it felt like a re-run one night later. And, WWE did not replicate by advertising a host of Raw wrestlers on Smackdown the night-after. (3) The hook on Raw wasn't strong. Simply advertising "Champion vs. Champion" between C.M. Punk and Daniel Bryan wasn't strong enough, especially when WWE has used that marketing pitch too often recently to diminish the value of what should be a PPV main event. WWE has also watered down the value of matches, titles, or being a champion, so the general audience was not going to be blown away by the advertising of a wrestling match, especially featuring a newer heel champion who isn't presented credibly. (4) The first hour of Smackdown was a drag and there simply wasn't the energy of a live show to draw viewers in for the remainder of the show. (5) It was the sixth and seventh hours of live WWE programming over three days, making the Smackdown episode expendable for many viewers.
Bottom line is that Smackdown's home is Friday and the Tuesday live specials need to be cut back to two times per year, rather than on a quarterly basis, so they actually mean something and WWE can take the time to make the live specials...special.

| Yeah the rating sucked compared to normal SDs on Friday.
I watched it and for the most part it was good I guess others were not as interested though. :-/ | |
