The Song of the Year nominees at this year's Grammys are: "The A Team" "Adorn" "Call Me Maybe" "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)" "We Are Young"
"We Are Young" (for six weeks), "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)" (for three weeks) and "Call Me Maybe" (for nine weeks) all ranked at No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
"We Are Young" and "Stronger" are nominated for both Record and Song of the Year, which is significant. Tunes that win either award are nominated in both about half of the time.
Fun. has the edge over Kelly Clarkson for two reasons: the group has the most Grammy nominations (six) and it wrote their song. Clarkson has three bids. "Stronger" was nominated for Song of the Year, but Clarkson did not write it.
"Call Me Maybe" is the most ubiquitous and well known song of 2012. It could win despite being nominated only for Song of the Year. Remember, Beyonce's "Single Ladies" failed to receive a bid for Record of the Year in 2009 as expected, but went on to bag Best Song.
Unlike Frank Ocean, Miguel is nominated throughout the R&B field. It is not likely for Miguel’s "Adorn" to win. Three times in the last decade a R&B song has won Song of the Year at the Grammys: Alicia Keys' "Fallin'" (2001), Luther Vandross' "Dance With My Father" (2003) and Beyonce’s "Single Ladies." However, all three artists and their songs were much better known than Miguel’s "Adorn."
"The A Team" is least likely to win because this is Ed Sheeran's only Grammy nomination this year. He was snubbed for Best New Artist and shut out of the pop field.
"We Are Young" seems to be the anthem of this year's Grammys with the shut-out of veteran artists like Bob Dylan, Lionel Richie, Madonna, Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen in the general field.
I predict "We Are Young" will prevail. | |
