TNA Impact on Thursday, March 14 scored a 1.07 rating, down from a 1.13 rating leading into Lockdown and a 1.14 rating two weeks ago for Jeff Hardy's TV return.
The first permanent road TV episode also declined in viewership to 1.41 million viewers, down slightly from 1.43 million viewers last week and 1.49 million viewers two weeks ago.
The silver lining for Impact was strong ratings in the key demos of males 18-34 and males 18-49, which both hit year-highs. It's apparent the immediate Lockdown fall-out and being on the road drew in the key male audience, but not a wide-enough audience to give Impact an overall ratings boost.
Inside the numbers, Impact was hurt by the first hour, which only scored a 0.96 rating for the immediate PPV fall-out. By comparison, last week's first hour scored a 1.11 rating. But, the second hour increased to a 1.19 rating.
There was no unusual competition on cable TV Thursday night, as the big shows were "Swamp People" on History and NCIS repeats on USA Network. The NBA game on TNT drew the same 1.4 million viewers as Impact.
Caldwell's Analysis: Obviously, the overall rating dipping from the previous two weeks in Orlando is not good, but TNA and Spike TV will be very happy with the key male demo ratings. As TNA's product continues to embrace a WCW look & feel, the company should be able to draw in older fans, but it will make it more difficult to draw in newer fans unless new stars are better highlighted or older stars are placed in newer positions.

TNA Impact on Thursday, March 14 scored a 1.07 rating off a first hour 0.96 rating and 1.19 second hour rating.
The first hour rating ranks near the bottom in 2013, while the second hour rating ranks in the middle.
Impact was dragged down by one of the lowest-rated quarter-hours of the year - a 0.86 rating in Q2. Impact then re-built to a 1.00 rating at the end of the first hour leading into a 1.20 rating at the top of the second hour.
Encouragingly, Impact peaked at the end of the show with a 1.24 rating for the finish of Sting vs. Austin Aries and the show-closing brawl between Aces & Eights and the TNA roster.
First Hour Break Down
Q1: Impact opened with a mere 0.99 rating for the big Lockdown PPV fall-out that curiously started with a teased Tag Title match that was cut off by Aces & Eights. This led to Bully Ray's heel turn explanation. There was also half of one commercial. (Q1 Previous Two Weeks in Orlando - 1.08 & 1.04 ratings.)
Q2: Impact declined to a dreadful 0.86 rating for the first-half of the Knockouts tag match. Included were one-and-a-half commercial breaks. Even factoring in the commercials, the Knockouts division has lost its drawing power in recent weeks. (Q2 Previous Two Weeks - 0.97 & 1.15.)
Q3: Impact bumped back to a 0.97 rating for the final two minutes of the Knockouts tag match, one commercial, the very brief Robbie vs. Robbie match, and backstage segments. (Q3 Previous Two Weeks - 1.04 & 1.18 ratings, which was the peak rating last week.)
Q4: Impact reached its first hour peak with a 1.00 rating for a series of backstage segments and video packages, plus two full commercial breaks. It seems the audience began "finding Impact" nearing the top of the hour. (Q4 Previous Two Weeks - 1.10 & 1.07 ratings.)
Second Hour Break Down
Q5: Impact increased to a 1.20 rating with a new wave of viewers tuning in to discover Daniels & Kazarian dressed like the Road Warriors, which was followed by James Storm vs. Daniels, A.J. Styles's return from absence, and one commercial. (Q5 Previous Two Weeks - 1.31 & 1.16 ratings.)
Q6: Impact dipped slightly to a 1.15 rating for Joseph Park's drawn-out promo that was interrupted by Matt Morgan to set up a match next week. There was also one commercial. (Q6 Previous Two Weeks - 1.27 & 1.13 ratings.)
Q7: Impact increased slightly to a 1.17 rating for the first-half of Sting vs. Aries in the TV main event and one commercial. (Q7 Previous Two Weeks - 1.23 & 1.15 ratings.)
Q8: Impact increased to a show-high 1.24 rating for the end of Sting-Aries, one commercial, and show-closing brawl featuring Hulk Hogan addressing Bully Ray's heel turn. (Q8 Previous Two Weeks - 1.13 & 1.15 ratings.)
Caldwell's Analysis: Pick an adjective for the first hour - it was just not good. But, the second hour held up nicely and led to a strong closing number that perhaps will give TNA momentum going into next week's show. Overall, though, it wasn't that "pop a rating" moment that TNA was probably looking for coming off Lockdown and running their first Impact permanently on the road. | |
