"12 Years a Slave" was the top dramatic film nominee at the Golden Globes, earning seven bids including Best Picture (Drama). This follows Wednesday's SAG nominations, where the period drama also led. In addition to the picture prize, it earned bids for actors Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, and Lupita Nyong'o, director Steve McQueen, screenwriter John Ridley, and composer Hans Zimmer.
In the Drama picture race, "12 Years" faces its fiercest Oscar foe "Gravity," which earned four nominations, including Drama Actress (Sandra Bullock), Director (Alfonso Cuaron) and Score.
"Captain Phillips" also reaped four bids: Picture (Drama), Actor (Drama) for Tom Hanks, Supporting Actor for Barkhad Abdi, and Director for Paul Greengrass.
"Philomena" also contends for Picture (Drama) and earned two other nominations --leading lady Judi Dench and for the screenplay, written by co-star Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope.
"Rush" was the surprise fifth nominee and also picked up a Best Supporting Actor for Daniel Bruhl.
"American Hustle" leads all musical/comedy contenders with seven nominations including Best Picture (Musical/Comedy), where it competes against "The Wolf of Wall Street," "Nebraska," "Her," and "Inside Llewyn Davis." "Hustle" also reaped bids in all four acting categories: for leads Christian Bale and Amy Adams and supporting actors Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence.
"Nebraska" followed with an impressive five nominations includng nods for Bruce Dern and June Squibb as well as for Screenplay and Director.
"Llewyn Davis" and "Her" picked up three apiece. Also nominated for "Llewyn" are lead actor Oscar Isaac and the original song "Please Mr. Kennedy," co-written by Justin Timberlake. Nominated for "Her" are star Joaquin Phoenix and screenwriter Spike Jonze.
"Wolf of Wall Street" claimed fewer than expected nominations. Its only other bid is for Best Musical/Comedy Actor (Leonardo DiCaprio). Director Martin Scorsese was left out.

The Golden Globes nominated a lot of expected contenders, but in a year crowded with viable contenders there were inevitably major snubs, including Oprah Winfrey, who was believed to be the frontrunner to win Best Motion Picture Supporting Actress for "The Butler," and Martin Scorsese, who missed the cut for Best Director even though "The Wolf of Wall Street" was nominated for Best Picture (Musical/Comedy).
"Saving Mr. Banks" was also notably absent, earning only a bid for lead actress Emma Thompson but missing out on Best Picture (Drama) and Best Supporting Actor (Tom Hanks).
