'American Hustle,' '12 Years a Slave,' Top 2014 Golden Globe FILM Winners Golden%20Globes%20Statues%20Wide%20600%288%29

"American Hustle" was the big winner at the Golden Globe Awards, winning three of its field-leading seven nominations: Best Musical/Comedy Picture, Musical/Comedy Actress (Amy Adams), and Motion Picture Supporting Actress (Jennifer Lawrence).

Though the Globes have had a spotty track record over the last decade predicting the Oscars, a Globe winner for Best Picture has won the academy's top honor for the last two years ("The Artist" and "Argo"). That's good news for "Hustle" and for "12 Years a Slave," which won Best Drama Picture.

Best Picture was the only win for "12 Years," while rival nominee "Gravity" also won a single prize: Best Director for Alfonso Cuaron.

"Dallas Buyers Club" won both its acting nominations: Drama Actor for Matthew McConaughey as a crusading AIDS sufferer and Motion Picture Supporting Actor for Jared Leto as his transgender partner in activism.

Among other top winners, Cate Blanchett took Best Drama Actress for "Blue Jasmine," continuing her awards season sweep, and Leonardo DiCaprio won Best Musical/Comedy Actor for "The Wolf of Wall Street."

U2 accepted their second songwriting Golden Globe for "Ordinary Love" from "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom"; they previously won for "The Hands That Built America" from "Gangs of New York" in 2002. The night's other music award went to Alex Ebert, who surprised by winning Best Original Score for "All is Lost."

The Italian film "The Great Beauty" won Best Foreign Language Film, besting Cannes Film Festival champ "Blue is the Warmest Color." As expected, Best Animated Film went to Disney's "Frozen."

'American Hustle,' '12 Years a Slave,' Top 2014 Golden Globe FILM Winners Golden-globes-stautettes

A slew of records were set at Sunday's night Golden Globes. And a quartet of Oscar contenders saw their status elevated to frontrunners with wins here.

1. It was a night of a first-timers prevailing: Amy Adams (American Hustle"), and Jared Leto and Matthew McConaughey ("Dallas Buyers Club").

2. Although Michael Douglas earned his fourth career Globe for "Behind the Candelabra," it was only the second one he got for acting (after 1987's "Wall Street"). The other two were for producing film champs "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (1975) and "Romancing the Stone" (1984).

3. Jon Voight claimed the fourth Golden Globe in his career for his TV work on "Ray Donovan." The other three were for "Midnight Cowboy" (1969), "Coming Home" (1979), and "Runaway Train" (1986).

4. Double nominees losing both Globe bids this year: Chiwetel Ejiofor ("12 Years a Slave," "Dancing on the Edge"), Idris Elba ("Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom," "Luther"), and Julia Louis-Dreyfus ("Enough Said," "Veep")

5. Although they have many Globes on their shelves, both Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks continue adding to a large number of losses. Streep has won eight times but has failed 20 times. Hanks has eight trophies (acting and producing combined) but has lost seven times.

Based on the following stats, McConaughey, Cate Blanchett, Leto, and Jennifer Lawrence should now feel extremely comfortable about their Oscar nomination chances and possible wins ahead.

6. In the 70-year history of the Best Drama Actor category, only three men have won here and failed to receive an Oscar bid -- Anthony Franciosa (Career," 1959); Omar Sharif ("Doctor Zhivago," 1965) and Jim Carrey ("The Truman Show," 1998). Seven of the past 14 Globe champs in this category went on to win the Oscar.

7. Over the seven decades of Best Drama Actress, only two women who prevailed here were snubbed by the Oscars. There were unusual circumstances, however. Shirley MacLaine ("Madame Sousatzka) tied in 1988 with two other actresses (Jodie Foster, Sigourney Weaver) that did receive nominations. Kate Winslet ("Revolutionary Road") won the 2008 Oscar for "The Reader" instead. Eight of the previous 14 Globe winners in this category triumphed at the Academy Awards.

8. While seven of the first 33 winners of Supporting Actor were left off the Oscar rolls, the past 37 Globe have earned Oscar bids. The most recent six winners (Javier Bardem, Heath Ledger, Christoph Waltz, Christian Bale, Christopher Plummer, and Waltz again) have also repeated at the Oscars.

9. Likewise, four of the first 34 Supporting Actress champs were spurned by the Oscars but the last 36 Globe winners have gone on to contend at the Oscars. The past five (Winslet in lead, Mo'Nique, Melissa Leo, Octavia Spencer, and Anne Hathaway) also prevailed at the Academy Awards.

2014 Golden Globes: 3 Lessons From The Show

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/race/golden-globes-3-lessons-show-670406

THR's lead awards analyst says that the Globes results only confirm what we already believed: that "12 Years a Slave," "American Hustle" and "Gravity" are the year's top contenders.

Tonight's film awards were spread across a whole bunch of productions. A lot of folks had something to celebrate but, as we now turn our attention to the Screen Actors Guild Awards and then the Academy Awards, do we have a better sense of where things stand? Yes and no.

The HFPA is composed of 89 foreign journalists. The Screen Actors Guild is composed of tens of thousands of actors. The Academy is composed of roughly 6,000 people who work in every facet of moviemaking. So what the members of one of those groups think doesn't necessarily offer any real hint of what the members of the others do or will.

That being said, we all went into tonight assuming that the best picture Oscar race will be waged primarily between 12 Years a Slave, Gravity and American Hustle. And I think each of those films emerged from the Globes with their full sheen intact. Slave won only one award, but none come bigger: best picture (drama). Gravity won only one award, but it was a big one too: best director. And American Hustle won three -- best picture (musical or comedy) plus two acting awards, neither of which were assured.

So what, if anything, did tonight teach us about the race, generally, and the way the HFPA/Globes operate, specifically? Here are four takeaways.

Lesson No. 1: At the Globes, Stars Beat Critical Darlings

Before swooping in for its big win at the end, 12 Years a Slave got off on the wrong foot, losing the first six awards for which it was nominated. It appeared to be on course for a shutout -- which an HFPA member actually predicted over Twitter last night -- and the loss that probably hurt the most was that of its breakout star, Lupita Nyong'o, to American Hustle's Jennifer Lawrence in the best supporting actress cateogry. I'm sure that the best actor loss of Bruce Dern to Leonardo DiCaprio hurt, too. But the bottom line is this: the HFPA, more than the Academy, has always favored A-list stars over critical darlings. These outcomes could easily be reversed at the Oscars, especially in light of the fact that Lawrence won just last year and Dern was last nominated 35 years ago.

Lesson No. 2: These Acceptance Speeches Can Matter

While, again, there is zero overlap between the memberships of the HFPA and the Academy, the Globes can influence Oscar voters in one way: by letting them essentially watch a "trial run" of an Oscar acceptance speech. Suffice it to say that if TV winner Jacqueline Bisset was hoping for an Oscar on March 2, she wouldn't have helped her cause tonight. But, conversely, several people who are in close Oscar contests did give themselves boosts with classy, funny and moving words at the podium. DiCaprio was gracious; best actor (drama) Matthew McConaughy (Dallas Buyers Club) was charming and, as always, did a good job of putting his career "recalibration" into context without ever seeming anything but humble; and his costar, best supporting actor winner Jared Leto, was generally funny, joking about how he looked as a woman, but also respectful, in paying heartfelt tribute to "the Rayons of the world." That is the kind of thing that only endears a contender to Academy members -- and the only people who had the opportunity to seize such moments were, of course, the Globe winners.

Lesson no. 3: Don't Count Out Anybody Yet

One other thing that the Globes results illustrated is that people like a lot of different movies this year. All Is Lost won for best score (and its score, by Alex Ebert, does deserve notice, as it is heard much more than Robert Redford in the film and keeps the audience engaged); Blue Jasmine continues to stay in the discussion thanks to its star, best actress winner Cate Blanchett; and Her had enough support tonight to topple big guns like 12 Years a Slave and American Hustle for best screenplay, and it doesn't need many Oscar voters to champion it like the HFPA did in order to crack into the best picture and/or best original screenplay Oscar categories.
